In this hand-colored short, a magician and his assistant do a series of magic tricks, including making potted plants appear, among others. Melies played the magician, and the actor Manuel played his assistant.
What can one say about this, not even a rudimentary plot, just Méliès doing magic tricks for the camera. It must have been absolutely insane to see this in 1909 and believe that anything in movies could be possible, even though I'm sure most if not all of these tricks could be done in not too different forms on the stage, it's interesting to me that simple editing tricks seem like fake magic to us now but at the time they probably seemed more magical than traditional stage techniques, even as I'm sure a lot of magicians at the time must have thought of it as cheating. Makes me think of that Arthur C Clarke quote about sufficiently advanced technology seeming like magic, with Méliès the two were never opposed to one another.
This just rules. Hand-colored, Georges Méliès starred in this as the magician, probably blew the minds of audiences 100-plus years ago. So amazing that these early shorts were preserved and are so easily accessible to the public.
Magician Youtubers are doing this exact kind of shit today only their camera cuts are better. Features a bat on a wire and wobbly skeleton boi so I’m considering this Halloween adjacent content.
