I should have checked the reviews before watching this; it's the worst installment in the V/H/S series. The main story follows a couple desperate for fame who chase a nearby police pursuit in hopes of capturing the ultimate viral video, but it quickly spirals into a mess. The anthology features three poorly executed found footage segments. The first, about a magician, is just lame with terrible CGI. The second, set in a mirror universe, was the only one I found mildly interesting, though it’s still bizarre. The last segment, involving delinquents in Tijuana encountering an evil cult, felt disjointed and uninspired. With four of the worst, most nonsensical, and visually obnoxious short films, including an incoherent wraparound, that can't even be bothered to adhere to the aesthetic restrictions of the series, V/H/S: Viral makes the first V/H/S look like Citizen Kane by comparison. If you remove all of the fake bleeps and blips of VHS tape white noise, this seventy-five minute feature would barely be an hour long.
Features a "WRITEN BY" (sic) credit. Enough said.
I didn't follow the order and watched V/H/S94 before this one and to be honest I didn't think it was bad but not so good either. If only I knew… I just saw a cloak killed and ate people.
Cloak: an outdoor overgarment, typically sleeveless, that hangs loosely from the shoulders.
A cloak! I'm so done with this franchise. The first one was good, it was new and original but enough is enough, a cloak! And I don't even want to talk about the rest of the film. I'm not sure what to expect from V/H/S99 but anything will be better than this. As long as there's no cloak.
