Kate Beckinsale is out here cracking necks like it’s her cardio in this sleek, fast-paced sequel. Theo James was also a nice addition with those piercing blue vampire eyes. While the film doesn’t fully sustain the intensity of that first 20 minutes, it remains one of my favourites in the franchise and go-to guilty pleasures.
for years, i have seen people argue that this is the best of the underworld films and i never knew what to think because i had never seen it before, but now that i have seen it, i have got to disagree. of the first four underworld films, i must say that i think this is the worst one. i don't think it's terrible, it's just painfully average and a huge disappointment.
They finally realized how boring Scott Speedman and his character are and Michael was unceremoniously dropped in the first five minutes. Unfortunetly, the new charisma vaccum showed up. And his name is Theo James.
Wes Bentley is in this in an uncredited role, which is so bizarre given how he is in top 3 most famous people in the cast and Charles Dance replaces Bill Nighy as older British actor who adds some class to this nonsense.
At least at heart it's about the bond between two women instead of a chick falling for some basic guy and trying to keep his incompetent ass safe. Let them fend for themselves, ladies.

Three years after the release of so far my favorite installment in the franchise, we have probably the worst one yet. Or, more accurately, the most disappointing one. The movie does offer a number of good ideas, and taking the war between vampires and lycans and involving humans effectively helps bring in new stakes, but unfortunately the movie never manages to maximize its potential.

I want you to explain something to me.
How the hell do you mess up a film with a gorgeous heroine, vampires, werewolves and Charles friggin' Dance?
It simply fails on all levels. The CGI looks awful, the creature design uninspired, the plot is as predictable as it is bland and the action about as exciting as knitting a sweater.
I actually enjoyed some of the previous Underworld films, but this one is guilty of one critical offence.
It is beige.

Ummm...i’m still a bit shaken but this is actually, good? Not just passable or so bad it’s good, but a genuinely exciting, fun, good film? I was about 25 mins in when I sat back n thought to myself how superior the opening was to rest of the series, biding my time waiting for the quality to drop, and it just..doesn’t. I’m still in a bit of disbelief I won’t lie.
The Underworld is now Overworld, with a lot of unhappy humans, and it’s all the better for it. The fights, despite the traditionally manic editing, are coherent with longer takes and at times actually thrilling, while the gore is gorier than ever. For once the story - this time…

Underworld: Awakening is, in some sort of measurable way, the "best" Underworld movie, but it is also the least-Underworld Underworld movie.
Awakening has more than twice the budget of any other installment in the franchise, and you can definitely see the money on the screen. The film was shot for IMAX, and the depth of field and clean visuals are more in line with mainstream blockbusters. Whether this is good or bad is a matter of personal taste, of course, but it is undeniably different. The opening credits feature an interesting story idea. The rest of the film doesn't. So, I recommend you watch the first two minutes, then for the remaining eighty eight, close your eyes, stick your fingers in your ears and imagine your own film. I did and it was brilliant. There were aliens, undersea mermaid battles, my inauguration as president of the world and some rather saucy moments between Kate Beckingsale and myself which took up a good portion of the running time.
So, in conclusion, my version of the film gets five stars with quotations like "a triumph" on the poster, whereas the real film gets... Sorry, I was just thinking of my scenes with Kate Beckingsale again, what was I meant to be talking about?
