films like underworld have become retroactively more interesting inasmuch as they represent the last dying breaths of mid-budget american action cinema. outside of things like john wick, there really isn't anything else quite like this still in existence. underworld isn't that great, in fact, it's quite terrible at several points, but it does hit a really specific sweet-spot in being an unauthorized vampire: the masquerade rip-off that gleefully indulges in its own inane supernatural lore and slow-mo dual-wielding trenchcoat bullshit. i really do respect the dedication that something like this has to being a mix of practical creature effects and janky CGI, all the never-ending atmosphere of smoke and rain, and the james cameron-tier Blue™ filter that smoothers every scene…

I had more sexual chemistry with hot chocolate I drank while watching this than Beckinsale and Speedman have on the screen. She is all right, mostly because you can't possibly be anything but badass in such an outfit, but he is simply tragique. He fares even worse given that an actual alpha, Michael Sheen, is in this movie, being several acting levels above everyone else (except for Nighy). Combined. Ironically this is the film on set of which Beckinsale banged the director and ditched Sheen. So on the romance front this is far more eventful behind the scenes than on the actual screen.
But the visuals! The action! The music! The costumes! The nostalgia! <3 I miss Matrix-influenced messes so much.
