  I feel like many of the reviews on this one are downplaying one woman pursuing a man who attempted to rape her earlier in the film? Impressed by the feminist aspects of the film in the first half, but it feels like all that goodwill disappears so quickly.

  Interesting to see what his directorial vision looked before becoming a Hollywood director. The first half of the film has some very poignant critiques to sexism, bourgeois and the overall class system in Hungary, but the second half somehow manages to undo all that by having the woman fall in love with her attempted rapist...

  A frustrating watch at best. The resolves and spirit of our main characters keeps being undercut by the decisions that the film makes;  and which often hinges on the largesse afforded by either a man or money, to the point that the premise of the first part is largely abandoned by the end to the point that I felt an active dislike and disappointment in both the characters and the way they chose to conduct themselves.

  Édes Vica, drága Gyöngyi

  Ahogy ezt néztem, két film is eszembe jutott, az egyik Szabó István filmje, a másik pedig a Sheila Levin meghalt, és New Yorkban él. Barátnők együtt laknak a nagyvárosban, aztán zajlik az élet. A Két lány az uccán 1939-ben készült.

  André de Toth filmje Martin Scorsese World Cinema Project nevű szervezetének köszönhetően csodálatos felújított változatot kapott.

  Több szempontból is remek darab, hiszen feltárul a háború küszöbén álló Budapest, a gangos bérházak, az éjszakai élet, a nőkre leselkedő veszélyek és a társadalmi elvárások, miközben öntudatos nőkkel találkozunk, akik saját kezükbe veszik sorsuk irányítását.

  Számomra Tasnády-Fekete Mária (a magyar Kay Francis) Gyöngyije válik a film valódi főszereplőjévé, az ő boldogsága kiérdemelt, vele szemben a protezsáltja, Bordy Bella Vicája…

  There's some really evocative visuals in this film and I loved the performances from the leads. It's very glossy on the surface, but I think it's a very cynical film about upward mobility and respectability. You can see how De Toth became one of the great directors of film noir.

  Én: Nem lehet olyan filmet csinálni, ami a bemutatása után több mint 70 évvel is progresszívnek fog tűnni (a feminista és az antikapitalista húrok egyidejű pengetésével), és ezzel párhuzamosan a progresszivitást zárójelező, a status quót (ironikusan?) megerősítő, felháborító genderügyi provokációként is hat.

  Interesting realist picture with some expressionistic elements, but the movie ruins everything it builds because one of our leading ladies decides she can't live without the man who's wooing her... who also happened to try raping her earlier in the film. What were the filmmakers trying to say? It was a very disappointing turn for the story that otherwise was building some interesting characters just trying to survive and help each other out.

  A film of social realism which dealt with sexism and classism from the get go, the best part came from the strength of female solidarity, but it was undermined by the cheesy love triangle which ended with the triumphant romance of an aristocratic male.

  Interesting early film by Andre de Toth about two women who meet in Budapest and try to help each other to survive life in the big city and dealing with men. Gyongyi is an educated woman from a wealthy family who is disowned when a man with whom she has had an affair marries another, leaving her pregnant. She travels to Budapest, her baby dies, and she joins an all women band as their violinist, struggling to make a living. The other woman is Vica, less professionally educated, from a poor family, she has taken a job moving bricks at a construction site. When an architect attempts to rape her, she makes enough noise to stop him, and is taken…
