South Korea's Mindhunter meets Memories of Murders.
I really enjoyed watching this show and Kim Nam-gil you bleedy beautiful bugger of a performer!! That interrogation scene in episode 10 and anxiety attack scene in car probably will never leave me. I've been replaying them for an unhealthy number of times. His portrayal of criminal profiler Ho Young is one of the most understated and subdued performances I've seen this year so far. One could feel his mental health deteriorating and the fake thick cold demeanored skin he developed as a coping mechanism withering away as episodes pass, unbearably hitting a rock-bottom.
Unlike other crime thriller dramas from South Korea, this show is interested more in the whydunnit than the howdunnits…
Its raining outside now and I've just finished this series. Fuck man, its a goosebumps feelings. This series fills a hole in me, that of people dealing with fucked up shit. Gives me a combined vibe of Memories of Murder and Mindhunter. One of the dopest criminal psychology I've ever seen.I do enjoy that almost all of the interrogations. It's gripping and haunting.
"There is no perfect crime"
Through the darkness is a crime series with a slow pace plot but solid storyline. This focused on how they analyze the psychopath's act and behaviour which is undeniably terrifying and kinda disturbing. Especially those cases are inspired by the real event. Even they really equate the appearance, look and character of the actors with the real killer. I've got goosebumps when I realize how detailed this kdrama is. All of the actors are doing really well and their acting needs to be appreciated.
“Through the Darkness” adapted from non-fiction “Those who Read the Minds of the Evil” (yet Korean title of the series is the same as that of the book), which talks about the real life field experience of the first criminal profiler of Korea, Kwon Il Yong (Kwon actually had a cameo as criminal profiler in K-drama “Mouse”).
The fast-paced series consists of only 12-episode, with phenomenal acting of KIM Nam Gil and KIM Joong Hee, whilst the rest of the cast also delivered very solid performance.
What I like most of the series are,
1) it consists of short stories, so it’s not draggy and no unnecessary twists to extend the airtime of each murder case
2) it focuses not only on the psychological aspect of the criminals, but also on bereaved families and police, which are important and rarely presented in the media.
Highly recommended to true crime fans, hope there will be S2 soon.
SORRY I USE MIXED LANGUAGE HERE
Although the plot is not as rapi as "voice" "tunnel" or "mouse" but this is one story that's different from most kdrama genre criminal mystery.
More focus on crime psychology (profilers) dan tetep detail in every scene of investigation also the portrayal of emotions in all the actors especially the actors rata rata yang main aktor film so there is no doubt about the quality right?
Sikopetnya mirip banget sama tipe tipe sikopet di ketiga series "voice". Ada beberapa sikopet. They are still bastards, shameless, never feel guilty, proud of their achievements in killing many people and of course have no emotions. Pokonya super sekkiya.
Udah familiar with some parts because long before this…
Surprisingly, crime documentaries, series, and movies often focus on the criminal as a main character. We know everything from their childhood, background, the crime conduct from start til the end. But the question is, are they worth the recognition? Or should we shift the attention to the loss of the victims and their families instead. Doing so doesn’t mean putting cam on their face but be aware of their grief and how seeing these criminals get recognized from killing their loved ones could make them feel.
Loved that this series portray exactly that without it being boring. The focus is on the work, the struggle of person in authority and the grief of the families of the victims. At the end of the day, these people are the one who deserves peace, happiness, and recognition on their bravery in trying to continue their life with such a big hole in their heart
so gooooood. kim nam gil was fantastic here. mad props for profiler out there. i literally got chill on my bone because of the last killer characteristic.
wanted to watch this since i saw kim namgil get the daesang for this! this was extremely harrowing to watch and you can really sense how much thought the cast and crew have to portray the story with such sensitivity. kim namgil totally disappears into the character and it's just heartbreaking to watch his character break over time 💔 definitely grew respect for criminal profilers after this!
Kim Nam-gil is a fantastic actor, but this time I watched this show for all of the actors who played serial killers.
