appreciated the attempt at a nasty, child-eating creature feature with practical fx. might've liked it if it leaned a bit harder into its creepy monster setpieces (which are more effective and bloodier than i anticipated) instead of the bland, mopey kid going through puberty + parents divorce. i think they meant to get connect the two in some sort of allegory for loss and transformation but the writing/performances don't ever really develop the feelings enough for it to work.
Witch in the Woods Fright Night. Suspenseful, atmospheric, and gross when it needs to be, The Wretched was exactly what I needed last night. A solid witch jam with above average performances from a cast of completely (to me) unrecognizable actors. I loved the working at the marina setup and the millennial neighbor parents are a perfect caricature of people I know in real life. It’s weird when you are now the age of parents in movies... time flies.
Anyway, I liked this way more than I thought I would, there’s some gnarly witch stuff in this and I couldn’t help but feel a touch of Joe Dante here. Neat little movie.
🪝Meh 🏷️ Impression 🩸 Horror ⛤ Witchcraft (2019)
Skip this. 50 minutes in, the most horrifying thing about this film is that I am still mortal and will not get the last fifty minutes of my life back. And now I finished it to make sure. Yep, no.
The music is so horrible—I feel very cheap and overwrought just listening to it. Nothing scary is happening, and it's just sort of made-for-TV leftover feeling. The gore is sterile. It's not that it's bad so much as that it makes no impression.
You could watch this, and you might become scared during it, but why would you when there are other films in the universe that do that and are also clever and more worthwhile?
(Is it useful for me to leave a review when a film is bad? I usually have just ignored these instead to avoid being spammy, but I'm thinking it might help others avoid wasting time.)

It’s genuinely hard to go this low (score-wise) with a film that managed to impress in so many categories. It looks great for its budget, it provides some creepy imagery, and it gives us an interesting feel that we rarely see in movies today. A defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parent's imminent divorce, faces off with a thousand year-old witch. This witch is living beneath the skin of and posing as the woman next door. We get this story from the perspective of Ben. Ben gets bullied, and he becomes firmly entrenched in this wacky situation involving parents forgetting about their children. As always in Horror, he seems to be the only one noticing…

I’m pretty sure every movie that has the ‘let’s spy on the neighbors because they are up to some weird ass shit’ theme is entertaining. Like honestly, if you can’t create tension out of this trope, just give up your aspirations in film!
But The Pierce Brothers hedge there bets here and also sprinkle in some ‘out of towner kid can’t fit in’ with a dash of ‘strained parental relationship’ and finish it off at 325 in the ‘what a twist!’ oven.
However, we all know that all these winning ingredients can be spoiled by bad CGI, so I was delighted to see some pretty great creature effects as well.
Not as good as grandma used to make, but definitely a high end store bought.
Bon Appetit!
(I think I started using all these food metaphors because little kids get eaten in this).
Some nice visuals and makeup effects peppered throughout a slightly more intense, feature length Goosebumps episode. It's very cute and entertaining from time to time, but it leans on far too many clichés to be memorable at the end of the day.
I always seem to enjoy IFC Midnight films and this was no exception! It’s a nice spooky supernatural demon witch creature tale. You know, the kind where it never really goes too deep into exactly what the creature is, but it doesn’t matter because it sure looks cool. This one inhabits human skins and the way it cracks around inside the empty carcass is beautifully done.
The lead actor is more than just a cute face, he really does a great job and it’s a good thing because some of the other actors are lacking. I mean, you don’t go into these movies with any expectations of good acting so he was a very refreshing surprise. Hope to see more…
Why all of these horror movies nowadays seemingly using bone cracking noises and odd poses so often? It bummed me out a lot, not original at all, y'all.

A decent creature feature. I enjoyed the creature design/final outcome. Lots of fun and creepy moments. Nice atmosphere and some solid visuals. Also the effects were mostly well done too. I mean it’s fairly standard in terms of creature feature and not entirely effective with its premise, but overall, a solid watch for someone who loves shit like this. 6/10🚤
Murder and May-hem, Day 6, challenge #1 - Greetings from Canada! Grab some poutine and the nearest moose* and watch a Canadian horror movie.
*don't actually grab a moose
The epitome of a mediocre horror movie. I liked the concept of this; I see "witchy lore" and click play dammit. But there is literally like a minute spent on the actual lore, the most interesting part of the movie, and most of it is taken up with the characters, the least interesting part. Why is so much time spent with random bullies and kids at a party who have no bearing on the plot and aren't even interesting? They needed to focus on the core characters - the main kid…
