When I was a kid, my dad represented a man accused of multiple murders, and when he was acquitted of the crimes, as a show of gratitude, he took our family out to dinner at Bonanza Steakhouse. As we all sat there eating, I kept staring over at the man, wondering if he was capable of such atrocious acts. At one point, he busted me, looked up from his plate and met my gaze. He set his silverware down and adjusted himself in his chair so that he was staring directly at me. He didn’t nod or smile. He didn’t blink. And when I looked away, for a few moments after, I could still feel him watching me. No one else seemed to notice, and after a spell he turned back to his food.
I remember thinking, matter-of-factly: “Oh yeah. This guy totally killed those people.”
(Title #10 of The Eleventh Annual October Scare-a-thon!)
"You think women have had to deal with shit like this since like the middle ages?"
I feel like I’m the only person in the world who watched this BEFORE Thunder Road but I’m into it! This has some really nice moments but I think the (interesting) subplots kind of fold in on each other and make it hard to care or find a clear tone. It dabbles in comedy, horror, and drama but never REALLY commits to any of them. But, it does those little moments of each style super well. The cinematography is FULL of personality and quirk, especially one shot that I can’t really describe but works really well comedically.
Again, have not seen Thunder Road, but Jim Cummings definitely proves here that aside from being such an important figure in contemporary independent filmmaking, he’s also a fearless filmmaker who isn’t afraid to throw shit at the wall. Sometimes it lands, sometimes it doesn’t! But he certainly has my attention.
jim cummings king of the "everybody's crazy but me" out of your depth scream
i like watching jim work because i always come away from certain scenes going ooh ho ho ho that's a neat little trick! the man uses everything in his directing bag... the reveal in the hospital... the way he sets up character quirks to wordlessly tell us what they're doing later... the gag where he's talking shit to someone and we just hear the chair move as his eyeline changes... brilliant. reserved. i'm jealous! i'm inspired! movies have da power to change the world!
This movie shows me 5 things:
1. Cops are dumb
2. Werewolves are cool (but also dumb)
3. 83 minutes is the perfect runtime for a feature-length
4. Jim Cummings is incredible at yelling. He can make a 5 hour movie about him breaking down/crying/yelling, and I'd still eat it up.
5. Robert Forster ❤️❤️❤️
Say what you will, but an alcoholic cop with a short temper is way scarier than a werewolf.
And on today’s episode of “Watch Jim Have a Breakdown While…”, we watch Jim have a breakdown while investigating a werewolf in a snowy mountain town!
Jim Cummings - kind of a weird dude! Great filmmaker though. Very unique, quirky style. Also funny as fuck. The Wolf of Snow Hollow does an excellent job of showing off his offbeat blend of dark comedy and legit horror in an impressively <90 min runtime, but in reality it’s main success is giving us insight into whatever happened to Total Frat Move poster boy Jimmy Tatro. Spoiler alert: he’s still Jimmy Tatro!
First off... All the werewolf attacks were great and looked great, the cast was terrific, and I had no idea what this movie was going to be like since I knew nothing about Jim Cummings going in to this.
Now I’ll probably never miss anything he makes.
This pressure cooking small town bumbling cop serial killer family drama werewolf move kinda threw me for a loop when it started… the comedy and horror both worked for me… but once that Zodiac-like mystery shit clicked I was in and all the meltdowns happened I was in. I kinda loved this and can definitely see myself liking even more on a revisit… plus I’ve been waiting for a werewolf to look this cool in movie for what feels like a long time.
The Wolf of Snow Hollow doesn't always get the balance right but it's mostly effective, darkly amusing and extremely weird tonal & genre-mashing exploration of monsters within, fatherhood, addiction, and the fragility of masculinity. Jim Cummings as a cop in the midst of a breakdown is incredible, his performance alone elevates the entire movie.
Tone is everything in a film like this and if it clicks, it clicks with conviction. And I think it's safe to say that Cummings' dark and off beat approach to this film suited me just fine.
There is something pleasantly hysterical about this film. There are no characters that seem to fit, they all seem to possess a certain subdued frenetic energy scratching at the surface. And when it breaches that surface it really comes into its own and embraces the rules set in its own universe with vigor.
Cummings is the conduit of this energy. And where I can see that what he does here can feel grating if it doesn't click, I for one thought it was…
