The story of a young woman's (played by Jessica Biel) repeated attempts to dry her tank top. At every turn a chainsaw wielding maniac is there, and try as she might she just cannot get to a stopping point in order to dry said garment. Sometimes you have to kill someone to be comfortable.
1974's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre emerged from a fulminating chaos, a world without moral order, without justice or rationality. Anything could happen at anytime to anyone. Anything could be done at anytime by anyone. To say that things were spiralling out of control would to have assumed that things were, at any point, in control to begin with.
This ends up being an optimistic view of the cosmos, or at least, one which admits the possibility of optimism.
2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre knows that there is a moral order to this universe, that there is a justice, that there is law, and that law serves those who wield it in their interests. It knows that whatever name that happens…
For years I’ve had a love/hate relationship with this movie and I feel like I need to toss out there that I think Tobe Hooper’s masterpiece is the greatest horror film of all time—a sun-soaked, sweat drenched nightmare excursion into pure southern gothic death dread—It’s a fucking genre monolith, and nothing will ever detract from that.
So on to Nispel’s iteration.
Its pretty good too! I was 18 and fresh out of high school in 2003 when this hit theaters and Shortly after graduation I hopped in a van with 3 other friends as we hit the road for two weeks to see national parks, landmarks, and meet as many interesting & different people that we could find. We stopped in…
So early 2000’s. Sweaty and dirty. Hot young people getting taken down one by one. This was actually pretty creepy and frightening. Would have scared me if I saw it in 2003.
At one point I wondered out loud “I wonder where this takes place? Maybe Ohio?” and that’s why you don’t inhale helium to make your voice sound higher in 4th grade and kill all your brain cells because you become a dumbass like me
Decided to watch the Marcus Nispel remakes of this and Friday the 13th recently and although I enjoyed F13th a bit more, Jessica Biel does a great job carrying TCM and I love that Daniel Pearl, who shot the original, shot this film. A very different look from the original but very glossy and quite beautiful.
