According to Bart Simpson, "If TV taught me anything , it's that miracles always happen to poor kids at Christmas. It Happened to Tiny Tim, it happened to the Smurfs, and it's going to happen to us." But it better happen fast. The Simpsons are in a Yuletide jam-there's no money for presents, and they may have to cancel Christmas! Before the crisis ends, Homer gets a job as a part-time Santa, Bart gets a tattoo, and the whole family- even Grandpa and Marge's nasty sisters- gets into the holiday spirit when they discover the true meaning of Christmas.
it’s perfect 🥹 i’ve watched this so many times in life but i love it more each time i come back to it. such a lovely story for the first episode of an iconic tv show! andddd it’s about them getting their first dog?! PLEASE there’s no universe in which this will ever be rated lower than 5 star❣️
“But he's a loser. He's pathetic. He's...a Simpson.”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single episode of the Simpsons all the way through. I was always more of a fan of Family Guy, which still reigns true today, although I don’t regularly watch either show. However, with the release of Plusaversary, I decided to watch all the Simpsons shorts on Disney+. During this, I discovered this was listed on Letterboxd. I didn’t know what episode it was, or how long it was, but I decided to watch it to end the marathon. And boy oh boy, what a fantastic first episode of a show to watch.
If this is what early Simpsons is like, I think I’d love the first…
Oh, Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg, the Batmobile broke it's wheel, and the Joker got away....
Rating hasn't changed.
+ In the first television feature length episode of the long running sitcom featuring America's favourite family comes an Christmas special that sees Homer Simpson being forced to become an mall Santa to cover his Christmas bonuses loses when Marge is forced to spend the savings on an Tattoo that Bart got.
There isn't much to say about the first episode of 'The Simpsons'. It's an charming and wonderful first episode. It has the small amount of humour that the series would go on to offer in later years.
This is definitely the episode from series 1 that I have rewatched the most.
Is there anything better today than watching 'Simpsons' Xmas specials while drinking hot chocolate and doing my wrapping for Christmas presents??? I don't think so.....
What sets this apart from other holiday specials is that it's focused on what parents go through when money becomes a major issue during the season. When Homer comes home defeated and empty handed he is prepared for his family to be destroyed. This is now regarded as the first episode of The Simpsons, and it certainly set an unprecedented tone for animated shows of the day.
I watched it when it premiered, and I watch it every year. When his new dog, an after thought to his failed attempt to gamble his way into buying presents, comes bounding in to the delight of his family, I cry. Every. Year. Or at least I have since becoming a father. It cuts to the core of how stressful a time it can be when it really shouldn't be. This is truly a classic even if it's not regarded as one.
