Synopsis
You'd better go see it as soon as you can!
Madame Bertini, a newly widowed 70-year-old miser, has lived a sheltered life in squalour. She determines to venture into the modern world and have as much fun as possible, and in doing so finds that she loves it. She blows her life savings, much to the disapproval of the young people around her.

Carefully adequate adaptation of a Bertolt Brecht story, filmed in a cinéma vérité style and with a good cast, but Sylvie in the title role steals the show.

It’s only in the final moments that we realize the true scope of The Shameless Old Lady – a series of vignettes of a woman enjoying the last few months of her life, which come together to form one of the most magnificent social fables of the 1960s. The concluding remarks of the film make it very clear that this was a story of enjoying life – its echoed in the quote that began this review, which are incidentally the words that end the film. The Shameless Old Lady is an inherently bittersweet film, but one that does not thrive on being downbeat of sobering – rather, it goes another direction with a story that could have easily been saccharine…
