After a group of Texas teenagers leave prom night early and get into a car crash in the woods, they employ the aid of a nearby insurance agent, who calls in her tow truck-driving boyfriend, Vilmer Slaughter. Unfortunately for them, Vilmer is a sadistic killer with a mechanical leg who introduces them to his brother, Leatherface, and the rest of their twisted family.

When I was younger I think this or part III might have been the second TCM movie I saw in the franchise and I’ve had a weird fascination with this movie ever since.
I love the five/ten minutes in the beginning that feel Linklater-esque (some of the Dazed & Confuzed crew worked on this), the ‘on the way to the prom’ setup, Texas backwoods stuff, and once they are in that trashed filled house there are some really uncomfortable/disorienting moments. Matthew McConaughey is far too attractive to play this type of unhinged homicidal maniac. Like, they didn't even try to make him ugly. He even tried to show off his abs a couple of times! I first saw this movie when I was 17 or 18 and honestly wasn’t sure what to think except that it was weird, but I kinda liked it. Now, all these years later, I still think it’s weird as hell, but I kinda love it. It’s so absurd and bizarre that there’s just no way I can’t love it on a 4 star level.
Matthew McConaughey gives possibly his best performance so it’s a shame that he doesn’t like to associate himself with the movie. The original co-screenwriter is given a shot to revive this franchise and brings it briefly back to the deeply uncommercial dirty, low-budget ugliness and deranged hysteria. Not entirely successful and cribs too much of the literal structure of the original but much weirder and less polished than 3 which is my personal preference for these movies. Also features McConaughey doing the rare non-Cage mega-Cage performance that actually works and a last-minute deep state conspiratorial twist that is so dumb you can't help but admire it.
This was so much fun. I mainly came for Renee and stayed for Matthew. Matthew McConaughey was hysterical. He was having so much fun in the role. This movie was so cheap and trashy. I was kinda livin’ for it though.
