In yet another case of serendipity entering into my movie choices, the day after watching Richard Misek’s A History of the World According to Getty Images (2022), I got an email alerting me that Radu Jude’s short film (10 minutes) was streaming at dafilms. Misek’s essay film looks at the “ownership” (and attendant monetising) of archival historical footage, the power that comes from withholding access to this historical footage (that is in the public domain) except for a significant fee, and the consequences for an understanding of history that results from these images being held captive behind a paywall. Jude’s documentary comes at these same issues from a slightly different angle.
