  The Imitation Game plays like polite dinner conversation at a party, before drinks have been served to loosen everybody up. It's so mannered and inoffensive that it seems to come at us from the chamber of a prettily-furnished snow globe.

  It's a biopic that chronicles three interwoven periods in the life of mathematician Alan Turing, a solitary introvert who developed a machine that deciphered codes the Nazis used to deliver tactical messages during WW2. A latent homosexual, the film explores Turing's difficult and ultimately failed efforts to reconcile his nature with societal pressures to lead a conventional life.

  If you happen to follow my Twitter feed, you'll know that I've already gotten a bit hot and bothered about this film. In retrospect, it was probably a good deal of energy wasted, or at least misdirected. I tend to forget that useless dreck like The Imitation Game is pimped on every streetcorner around Oscar season by an industry that considers movies as product, not art. Most of the time, that product is slathered in Adam Sandler, and it farts. (As we now know, even Sony employees have had enough of that production line.)

  But from mid-October on, it entails wan, forgettable "prestige" product, engineered to strike a chord with the industry itself. If you were trying to impress…

  Movies are a series of choices. At pretty much every decision point, the people who made this film chose to go with the less interesting, less historical, more generic, more implausibly melodramatic option. They turned what is in actuality a fascinating story about a fascinating man into tasteless mush. I am certain that Alan Turing would have hated this film.

  There is something appealingly old fashioned about The Imitation Game, while at the same time that's its biggest problem.

  Films about WW2 have always held a certain appeal to me and The Imitation Game hearkens back to those classic 'big' productions that tried to capture and somewhat romanticize what the times were like back then. These films weren't dealing with the gritty nature of war but more with the road to victory already traveled. This film has a sweeping story, bombastic music and a nostalgic sense of style. All these things are done to a high standard and betray a craftsmanship and attention to detail that I greatly enjoyed, making me skip over the more forced dramatic moments without problems.…
