maybe the 4th time's the charm. this series is obviously super repetitive and kind of corny but there were genuinely some moments of this that made my jaw drop for a second. at one point i gasped and said "the cinematography..." and my dad looked at me as if i had lobsters crawling out of my ears
Tag yourself I'm the guys playing basketball a mere five minutes after the purge ended as if there weren't hundreds of dead bodies around.
best part of this film was ‘alright’ by kendrick lamar playing during the credits, that song slaps😀
Rough first 40 mins or so as this still largely suffers from this franchise's chronic desire to eradicate the very idea of subtext but the increasingly apoplectic tone and sociopolitically loaded imagery eventually win out because unlike a lot of the previous entries, the violence here genuinely stings. The brief bloody, smoke grenade ballet slaps, and the final 20 mins with Y’lan Noel going full blaxploitation revenge hero is about as brutal and well-done as we could hope from studio horror.
the ironic enjoyment factor of Purge movies directly correlates with how much Frank Grillo they have in them
This is pure Social Realist Exploitation. A story of a member of the lumpenproletariat who is radicalized by his experience of the depravity of capital and chooses to fight against it, becoming a Hero of the People in the process. They just don't make stupid-smart, heart-on-your-sleeve agitprop like this any more.
The least subtle of all Purge films—also the angriest. A lot of stuff in this hits the nail on the head... spouting disturbing images—a massacred Church, a group of 8-10 soldier cops surrounding an injured black man on a baseball field while brandishing nightsticks, and the leaders of these government SWAT teams getting more cartoonish yet seeming more realistic? Scary stuff.
I waited a while to see this one but I’m glad I got to it—I loved the three leads, the change of direction/style from Election Year (which probably is the one I’m least interested in ever revisiting), and I can definitely say this joins Anarchy as my favorite of the Purge franchise.

Oh, I'm sorry. Did you want an actual review? Maybe I would've cared enough to write one had the director and screenwriters actually cared to put dialogue in that wasnt so inept and the dullest story you could put in this potential-loaded franchise. Did we even need a prequel? The Purge itself worked best as an idea without explanation- like a totalitarian society. This takes four steps back from the outrageously fun Election Year and ruins the entire premise and mythos behind the Purge by throwing in extensive and unnecessary exposition behind the legalization of its annual night of anarchy. Pure psychotic mania from the last two Purge films turns to unmitigated boredom and blatant political messages on classism that do little to get their point across without a blaring bullhorn.

Attention filmmakers: I don't give a fuck. I'll take all the bad dialogue, bad acting, hackneyed storytelling and lopsided editing you can throw at me, as long as you give me something I can feel. This movie is ANGRY--at white supremacy and out-of-control capitalism, at the institutions that support them, at the lengths those institutions will go to uphold it while simultaneously denying it exists. It's a primal scream of a film, and I felt every reverberation. Its politics are unsubtle and maybe even a little muddled, but since when was rage ever clean and precise?
