releasing a movie during Pride month about a monster that hides in the closet? rude!
While definitely not the worst of Kings adaptations it’s certainly not the best either. The Boogeyman lands somewhere in the middle.
We’ve all seen what happens when Stephen King’s material falls into the wrong hands, but luckily Rob Savage is quite capable of handling Horror. This time ditching the found footage genre, and sticking to a more conventional approach, Rob manages to create atmosphere and doom surrounding the dark. This mostly works as it generates tension every time we see an area with no light, but this same trope has been used before and lessens the impact it has. This movie is copy and pasted every year with an alternate title and a monster that looks slightly different.
this was a pretty solid watch. it doesn't bring anything new to the table and you can see every jumpscare coming from a mile away, but i still had a really good time. we've even got the cliché mean girls that treat the protagonist like absolute shit then act like she's the problem when she finally fights back. personally, i would've choked the hell out of that blonde girl, but that's just me. i'm also a bit tired of the whole 'family trauma' trope in horror, but it honestly works really well here. this was definitely worth the price of the movie tickets.
sophie thatcher was absolutely amazing, which is no surprise, and i really hope she does more horror projects like this in the future. i can't think of anyone who would've fit this role more perfectly than her and i can't wait to see more from her.

Being so serious when I say that we *really* don't need to make this type of movie anymore. We have The Empty Man. Not bad, watchable, destined to exist in bargain bins for the rest of time.
