In January 1943 the German army, afraid of an Allied invasion of the Balkans, launched a great offensive against Yugoslav Partisans in Western Bosnia. The only way out for Partisan forces and thousands of refugees was the bridge on the river Neretva.

možemo da budemo zli i bezosećajni i kažemo da je ovo spektakularna ali smaračka komunjarska propaganda gde deca uče da čitaju tako što sriču AVNOJ. a možemo da prigrlimo te činjenice i patetiku i na ovaj film gledamo kao na divnu bajku o hrabrosti, borbi i slobodi. gde i kad se umire, umire se u paru, da bude lakše. gde rat nije surov, samo tužan. ovo je bajka o kolektivnoj patnji jednog naroda koja je naravno zaglavljena u jugoslovenskom kulturnom diskursu do bola. ali u njoj opet ima mesta za sve i svaki poludeli tifusar se shvata ozbiljno. niko se ne ostavlja. sve čeka beskrajna zelena livada posle kilometara i kilometara snega i leda. ovo je bajka gde partizanski moral pobedjuje uz horsku pesmu i zvona. a sad mi dajte ceo jedan film samo o mileni dravić i njenom dečku tifusaru MOLIM VAS
The cheesiest war movie I’ve ever seen—but golly, it’s still so much fun watching the partisans totally dunk on the combined forces of European fascism.
This was definitely a big influence on Star Wars—the costumes, the battle scenes, the score. . . . It feels like everything that didn’t come from Zatoichi came from Neretva. And who could make a better inspiration for our stalwart rebels than these dauntless dječaci i djevojčice?
Impressively grand in scope yet lacking in substance, Bitka na Neretvi might not be the best Yugoslav partisan movie ever made, but is without a doubt the most spectacular. It’s not complex or thought-provoking, nor does it want to be; it’s a straightforward tribute to Tito’s partisans, and in that respect it succeeds.
Neretva boasts some international star power: Sergei Bondarchuk and Bata Zivojinovic are convincing as a hard-boiled Partisan commanders, Orson Welles pops up as a chetnik senator in a scene or two, Hardy Krüger is (obviously) a nazi, Anthony Dawson an Italian fascist, and Yul Brynner... well, Yul Brynner is basically Crazy Harry the Muppet.
A lot of talent, but quite surprisingly the real stars of the movie were Ljubisa Samardzic…
This state-sponsered Yugoslavian epic WWII partisan movie, the most expensive motion picture made in the SFR Yugoslavia (some say $4.5 million, others suggest a budget of $12 million) signed off by the nation's leader and cinefile Josip Bronz Tito, The Battle of Neretva - one of the most significant confrontations between the Axis powers and the partisans in Yugoslavia - is essentially a Europudding take on Hollywood WWII epics such as The Longest Day. Directed by Veljko Bulajić (who is still directing movies today at the age of 95) from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother Stevan, there are numerous versions of this film available, but I watched the original 165 minute print which means my rating works out…
The movie had the ambitions of becoming the greatest war epic of Yugoslav cinematography, with first class domestic and foreign star powers of the time.
Instead we have a too long, quite boring, melodramatic, uncreative and emotionally shallow movie (we jump in circles from one character to another and develop no great empathy for anyone). I shall not even mention the propaganda elements i.e. creative alternation of historic events.
I believe that this story would work much better as a TV series or mini-series.

On one hand, the battle sequences (95% of the film) are staggering in size and scope, a truly magnificent achievement. On the other hand, except for a few cameos (Yul Brynner, Orson Welles, Hardy Kruger, Curt Jürgens, etc.), most of the characters are hard to keep straight, and their relationships are extremely muddled, at least in the 144-minute version I saw, with occasionally sloppy subtitles. The long version (175 minutes) was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and perhaps it is a little more coherent. This is a visual and logistical masterpiece, but so much was either missing or confusing about the connections between characters that the film suffers immensely in that department. Of the celebrity roles, only Yul Brynner's and Sergey Bondarchuk's are of special interest, though Kruger does well as a slightly reluctant German officer. Well worth seeing for the spectacle, which is deeply impressive.

Now this is how you make a war movie! The Battle of Neretva contains some of the most epic battle scenes I've ever seen in a movie. There must have been housands of extras during the making of this film, together with almost endless amounts of tanks, planes, horses etc. Stuff gets blown up and everything is filmed with wide-angle lenses so you truly get to experience the scope of the scenes. During the 2,5 hour runtime there are different people followed as the battle goes on, some being played by big name actors like Yul Brynner, Orson Welles and Franco Nero.
