Synopsis
This is the story of a lonely man named John. He wanders through the city into various acquaintances of varying levels of niceness. He sees a lot of people but sometimes they just don't want to be bothered with him.

perhaps not being his most visually embellished work, The Acquaintances Of a Lonely John still manages to perpetuate the same talent and assiduous filmmaking techniques that benny safdie employs in his more contemporary projects.
A great trope that I've come to appreciate about these Safdie shorts and early works is how the stories delineate not only a merit of themselves but also the subliminal stories that may occur through the sumptuous capacities of NYC. This short also portrays the eclectic sentiments that are tangible from safdies early works, it's arresting to see the genre and mood of the film synergize a thriller as well as a comedy, through an accosting robber to finding out its a humerous and benign outcome.…

ps: also speaking of benny safdie being 22 here.... he was really 22 when this went to cannes..... and it only went to cannes bc it showed w josh’s The Pleasure Of Being Robbed..... and he was 25............ my 23 year old ass feels worthless and unsuccessful as hell........... what the fuck.................. -
Short sweet and rather humorous. Glints of the excellence to come but rather inconsequential when all is said and done. A documentary on the Safdies I saw recently briefly talks about this and it's inspiration which is what put it on my radar. Glad I saw it but only a watch for completionists really.
Wouldn't recommend.

Okay compared to that first one I watched this resembles the raw layered anxiety-inducing stress cinema the Safdies are known for in their feature films a bit more closely even though this is still a very leisurely affair. Nice visuals, especially the scenes in John’s apartment.
