I saw this opening night in 2013 and loved it. It was a bonafied blast that played the crowd like gangbusters—It’s a meat and potatoes slasher for two acts before diving head first into zany goofball tcm lore of years past. Identity crisis my ass... this thing knows exactly what it is and I’m baffled by the egregious hate it gets.

Why did i rewatch this? Can't even bring myself to be annoyed at all the nonsensical lore/history/timeline rewriting they have to spend many exposition-filled minutes of this on (ultimately to try and make Leatherface and the Sawyer family into victims of corrupt cops???) because I'm too distracted by what has to be the ugliest, gimmicky digital photography of its era. There are a couple moments of extreme gore in here that would be more valuable in a film that had less cheap CG blood and more actual texture to it. How is the house so damn clean??? I will admit however that "do your thing cuz" got a chuckle out of me. Couldn't help but be reminded of the king.
Love that Leatherface leaves massive blood streaks on the ground that lead directly to his basement. Also the scene where Daddario tries to leap over a tiny fence and falls flat on her face is just beautiful, this thing is a comedy goldmine.

I’m kicking myself for allowing the general consensus to steer me away for so long. No doubt cynical viewers scoffed at the 3D, cringed at its very “requel” opening, and balked at Leatherface being painted in any sort of new light, but it’s totally the HALLOWEEN KILLS of this franchise, staring down one monster produced and manipulated by a community, daring to wonder what greater monsters surround him. The carnage proves to be agreeably anti-establishment, while the structure quite refreshingly does not try to recreate the original’s dinner scene for the length of a feature.
