- "you married my sister in the lion's cage at the circus last night!"
- "it's all a mistake, I thought she was one of the lions!"
After a wild night, a rich oil tycoon wakes up to find that not only is he married, but now has a new family that wants to murder him for his money. With the help of his butler and attorney (Laurel & Hardy), he hides out in a nearby hotel.
Not the greatest of shorts but it does contain some prime people watching and serves as a great time capsule of 1920s California. Back half is filmed at something called the Pike Amusement Zone in Long Beach, which operated under a few different names up until it eventually closed in 1979. Looked like a fun place!
A drunken marriage, followed by blackmail, ultimately leads to hijinks at the Venice Pier.
It is funny stuff, and I think I watch too many old movies because I immediately recognized Eugene Pallette in the final scene.
SUGAR DADDIES had me laughing out loud quite a few times. It is interesting how important James Finlayson was as a co-star in these early short films. In a way, it was almost as if Hal Roach was experimenting with the team consisting of a trio.
The story is one that had been told so many times before, and would be told many more times. Finlayson portrays Cyrus Brittle, a wealthy gad-about with an eye for the ladies. But, after one particular night of revelry, he wakes up married ... and the target of an easy money scheme.
There were so many good moments in this one. Butler Oliver Hardy engages in a much more enjoyable hat trick with Lawyer…
funhouse scene saves it
stan in drag again pretending to be hardy's wife again.......these kings really said gay rights
This was sort've meh, but the up close running shots as the main characters were being chased off the dancefloor were a hoot!
Rich man (Finlayson) gets married completely drunk and doesn't remember the day after. His new wife is only interested in stealing his money. He calls an attorney (Stan Laurel) to make things back to normal. The wife's brother is the villain with the gun. He is known for his legendary role in "Do Detectives Think? "(one of my favourite L&H). The butler is played by Oliver Hardy.
It's not so interesting. It has some fun moments but it's mediocre.
Another cute one. Nothing special… still waiting to see them as buddies.
Laurel and Hardy add James Finlayson and pretty much make up a trio here. Amusing situations and a fun slapstick conclusion in an amusement park. Good use of location and some nice shots enhance the visual comedy.
Firstly, Laurel and Hardy do know what sugar daddies are, right? Secondly, this is basically Love 'em and Weep again - the only differences are that James Finlayson is not getting second-billing this time and the climax where Laurel, Hardy and Finlayson run away to an amusement park. That saves the short as the trio rollerblade and tumble down slides that are certainly not health-and-safety approved. It's not that Sugar Daddies isn't a funny film, it's the fact that Fred Guiol and Hal Roach have recycled their own shorts with the same gags and punchlines. Sugar Daddies is forgettable in this light - it neatly fills in the Laurel and Hardy bingo card, yet it does not offer anything fresh to bring to the table.
This short had potential, but the gags weren’t good enough. Proving once again that their best work was in the sound era.
Stan Laurel, drag legend.
