some white person: shouldnt you be offended by this? :/
my brown ass and every other poc i've watched this with: stfu this is hilarious
I thought this movie was going to be some kind of critic to racism, but it's just a racist movie, covered with classic stereotypes and jokes.
A wasted oportunity
Racist white dad and racist black dad bond over fishing and realise they can be racist in-laws together.
I laughed a few times, it's generally a positive, upbeat movie, but for all the hullabaloo about how un PC it is, it reflects a fantasy of camaraderie that is so far removed from reality that it frankly makes me a little uncomfortable how much the French love it. White rich French Catholics learn to be accepting of anyone, any race, any creed! Provided they're upper middle class, educated, secular, socially integrated. Helps if you're good lookin' too. Ultimately after the laughs subside it leaves me a little cold - even if the director meant well.
Let me start by saying I can't tand this movie. It claims to have a message about acceptance but refuses to give any kind of nuance, using the classic trick of making the characters that are supposed to have an emotional journey and are supposed to get over their prejudice start out being way more bigoted than the average viewer is gonna be. That way, at the end of the movie, after the characters have grown they're at the same level of understanding and acceptance as you, aka basic human decency. There's no point of view besides a rich white french family, the daughters are impossible to emphasize with given how they treat everyone, including their husbands. And don't even think about having THEIR point of view since this movie is so obviously oblivious to actual poc experiences.
The humor relies so heavily on cheap racist stereotypes it's s hard to believe anyone bought this movie as being anti-racism.
I honestly don't understand why this movie has so many low ratings on here. Maybe the French humor doesn't work so well in other countries or languages, I really don't know. I genuinely think that this is a hilarious as well as thoughtful film, in its conception as well as its execution. There's a lot of dark humor, but it's never too much and always funny. Behind the bright and fluffy look there's much more going on and many great thoughts and messages unfold throughout the runtime.
I don't like that it's very heteronormative and that it promotes outdated stereotypes by every single one of the four sisters marrying and having children, but it serves the story and it makes sense within the countryside setting, so I think it's kind of justified. Also, the actress who played the youngest sister is so so pretty, I'd absolutely marry her too.
If your punch lines are nothing more than the mere stating of racist and sexist prejudices themselves rather than their deconstruction, then you've got a problem. And you've got an even bigger problem, when the sole point of your movie is to say "Everybody has preconceptions, so it's not so bad". Because that is reactionary bullshit.
The bottom line should be "We are not so different because we are all human." Instead it's "We are not so different because we are all racists."
SERIAL (BAD) WEDDINGS propagates accepting reprehensible behavior instead of coming to terms with one's own flaws and learning to be a better person going forward.
