A Soviet Boy's Town; all the life-lessons the Spencer Tracy character teaches his street-urchins is grounded in Marxist-Leninist EternalTruthiness. Plot's kinda disjointed and episodic; along about the halfway mark, I started feeling like they were making up incidents at random just so's they'd have enough movie to project.

The first Soviet sound film has some interesting visual ideas and doesn't get bogged down in long static shots of people talking, as so many early talkies did. I particularly like the way Ekk frames groups of faces, filling the screen from top to bottom, but his use of Soviet-style montage is far from the best example of the form. The narrative of the film has its moments and ends with a moving denouement, but moves too slowly overall. An interesting artefact of socialist realist filmmaking, but not a must-see.

This is a very interesting film. In a way rough to watch in it's Sovjet montage way. It's credited as the first Sovjet talky, but shot like a silent with a lot of dubbed sound and dialog. It creates an unique atmosphere. The story is brutal, filthy and honest with a strong character in Mustapha (Yvan Kyrlya in his only known film role) as one of the charming juvenile crooks we follow. It's not a movie for everyone, but it can be a very rewarding picture if you let it.

Corny, but the message is better than the American alternatives of the time

this, the first sound soviet film, endeared itself to me about as much as it stuck in my craw.
in a review one attempts to strive for a kind of narrative symmetry which states that one aspect is good and another aspect is bad. for example, i might be able to say that the stylism in 'road to life' was intriguing but that the propagandism was didactic and naff. alternately i might say that it was too formative an early sound movie but that the emotional core was affecting. thing is, all of that is true, as it happens.
so what does that mean? that both the film's text and its aesthetics each, independently of the other, broke just about…
