And someday, together, we'll shine...
Queer identity trapped in an inescapable labyrinth of labeled heteronormativity. Set in a rigid, systemic academy depicted not as a clockwork machine but instead always under construction, never finished, divided by crumbling gaps. A utopia left unfinished, unresolved, unsupportable, its students wander the Escher-esque stairways and skyways, receding into the geometry until they too have been absorbed by the normative ideal. None can escape. The unfinished gaps--the voids--keep them from doing so. Instead of building what's missing, the students polish and perfect what's already there, leaving the gaps to rot and decay, queer selves and whole people left abandoned.
To fill the void, the myth of the Prince is borne from the hearts of those…

the ultimate synthesis of hesse's demian and derrida. doesn't have that superlative television sequence of the 'eternal castle' shattered as the illusion that it is, but this whole film is that essential moment expanded. trades that subtlety in for the sensuous revving of an engine. while i consider the show in my top five most important media, this film is perhaps the greatest example of adaptation from long form into short form. ends up being one of the most fundamental, essential films in this way, the raw imagination outshining the entirety of american cinema, hell, all cinema, coursing through genre into such a refined interrogation…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
"You're not the only one who can transform into a car!" is almost certainly one of the greatest lines in movie history.

i can't believe revolutionary girl utena was just a 39 episode buildup to pixar's cars franchise. ikuhara truly is a genius

Love me two girls finding each other and escaping a patriarchal and heteronormative world that suffocates, limits, abuses, objectifies, possesses, and imprisons women. They may not revolutionize everyone, but they did revolutionize each other that led to revolutionizing their own selves.

CAUTION. DANGER AHEAD. YOU WILL DIE.
I want to be possessed. I want to be protected. I want you to know my sordid past, skeletons and all. I will out maneuver the obstacles with you. We will make it to the other side together. will you let this love be the vehicle for our dreams? Let's go outside.

In the year of 1999 the Japanese Kunihiko Ikuhara dares to perform in the form of OVA this anime released two years before, recreating and recounting, (I clarified, this is not a summary of the anime itself), I would say that the right thing to do would be to mention that it is a parallel reality as independent as it is complementary to this anime based on the manga of Chiho Saito which had a total of 39 episodes, I tell you this because I only got to the half and maybe now that I think about it I feel that I should have finished it before going straight to see this film, Anyway I didn't do it and this…

"[It's] the craziest film in the history of cinema. I have no idea what happened, I have no idea what I saw, all I know is that I left the theater floating six feet above the ground.'
one can well imagine the above Jacques Rivette quote made in reference to Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me also applying to The Adolescence of Utena, another film that occupies a nebulous relation to its parent series. while recently watching the series I was struck by how similar it was to the totality of Peaks – the arcs roughly line up to the seasons in their first arc/season being a tight encapsulation of what people perceive the series to be, the second arc…
