Finding himself down and out in Los Angeles, former porn star Mikey Saber decides to crawl back to his hometown of Texas City, Texas, where his estranged wife and mother-in-law are living. Just as this dysfunctional family seems to be making things work, Mikey meets a young woman named Strawberry working the cash register at a local doughnut shop.

just fantastic. this year’s Uncut Gems. Sean Baker is one of our finest directors, just making the most rewatchable, rich slices of Americana. far more comedic than the Florida Project, but darker in a much quieter way
Former porn star Mikey Saber (Simon Rex) might be “blessed” — at least according to the sore underage girl he’s grooming during a post-coital chat in the flatbed of her pickup truck — but the reality of the situation is that the guy is nothing less than a living curse. He’s a big-dicked, self-obsessed, hyper-opportunistic hex of a man whose puppy dog con artist schtick is so transparent that even naive teenagers can see right through it, which is exactly why people lower their guard and let him. Into their houses; into their panties; into their dreams for the future that Mikey incepts into their heads for his own benefit. And he doesn’t stop trying to weasel his way deeper…
A charismatic and resourceful dirtbag huckster pragmatically exploits every relationship he's ever had and threatens to destroy his hometown (alongside every life he deems worthless in it) to maybe be able to afford to live in California for a few months. Of course Sean Baker's version of a troubling 70s character study is one overdosed on NSYNC and Pornhub. Would make for a good pairing with Good Time. Just real vile, scuzzy, bottom-feeder money mindset hours in this, and genuinely one of the funniest and most beautiful-looking movies I've seen this year. Incredible zooms, anamorphic frames, and Texas location work but most importantly: multiple surprise full-frontal gags.
