Don't know what I was on when I initially gave this a 6/10. This movie is BAD. The score, animation, and a couple charming side characters can't save it. Its screenplay is insufferable and loaded with countless obnoxious unfunny quips, Sisu is the most irritating character in a Disney movie since the Rosie O'Donnell monkey in Tarzan, and the message about trust is genuinely irresponsible, not to mention beaten to death in increasingly unsubtle ways. The fact that Disney had the gall to release this the same year as Encanto is the most impressive thing about it; they really wanted their own "DreamWorks releasing both Shrek 2 and Shark Tale in 2004" moment, huh?
trust me when i say that this is one of the most beautiful films disney has ever made both inside and out and i would in fact die for raya’s gang of misfits dragon nerds unite!!!!!

There are lots of things to love about this; the animation is, of course, absolutely stunning. The water, the textures, the fabrics, the sky, the character and creature designs, the setpieces - it’s all mind-boggling and beautiful and I can’t believe it was done in quarantine. The worldbuilding is epic and diverse and just pretty cool overall. Some of the stylistic choices with the editing feel inspired by Bollywood and other Asian media, which is fun. The action is pretty engaging and genuinely brutal sometimes; even the weapons are creative and dope. The musical score by James Newton Howard, too, is full of character and uniquely inspired choices of instruments and sounds. Oh, and the message is very timely, too!…
I cannot count the amount of times my sister compared this to Avatar: The Last Airbender. In a general sense, this is literally like if Mulan met The Avatar and they are learning how to train a dragon.
This film is pure Disney magic at a time when it is most needed. In terms of world-building, Raya and the Last Dragon is probably one of Disney's best. With its fast pace, I do wish the film focused more on some of the fascinating setting and mythology, however the film still provides for a magical and wonderful experience. The cultural representation of Southeast Asia was mesmerizing and I appreciated how most of the main characters were all women. It's also funny…
This movie's plot is extremely predictable and derivative. However it's also a very cute movie with great characters, incredible animation and beautiful music.
