I've experienced some extreme examples of *teenage* dialogue that's clearly been written by a dude in his fifties - but when I heard the line "I would take Billy Corgan over any other man" being uttered by a 16 year-old in 2018 I fell out of my chair. Also I'm pretty sure this movie was written by Billy Corgan
Who amongst us has not been so irrationally angry as an adolescent to go off into the woods and summon a demon to dispatch one or more of our parents with whom we are really really really mad using one of those handy occult guides available at any mall bookstore but if this is the path you have indeed chosen, it is probably not the best idea to use a book by the author of 'HECTATE' but i get it there aren't a lot of choices in the mall bookstore occult section? not like i am an expert i am totally not!!!
Nice little demon/monster/possession horror film about a teen who one night gets into a big argument/fight with his mom and wishes for her to be killed, so of course she summons a demon as you do. And surprise, surprise—it doesn’t go well.
Good work all around from the cast, although the daughter's part was obviously written to be grating and unlikeable. That being said, Nicole Munoz did an excellent job of nailing the obnoxiousness while still managing to make you somewhat care for her by the end. Hoden, who plays a mother attempting to connect with her daughter while mourning the loss of her husband, makes the most of the role she's given.
One of the film's strongest points is…
Andrea from The Walking Dead and a couple Degrassi alums? Count me in. I really did end up liking this more than I expected! Let's be real though, none of this would've happened if the mom hadn't of said possibly one of the most vile things ever to her own daughter.
This was a very pleasant surprise! I hadn’t exactly planned to watch it, but it was on my Hulu playlist and automatically started playing after Oculus so I said sure why not...maybe that’s a smart way to do it sometimes because I didn’t spend an inordinately long amount of time deciding what to watch?
A teenager gets pissed at a parent and literally wishes them dead via black magic then immediately regrets it. It’s pretty relatable since even those with amazing parents probably had a moment or two where they experienced that just without the black magic...or maybe with that’s not really my business.
This is super heavy on creepy atmosphere and I really dug that. Lots of “inside the forest…
when your relationship with your mom is finally starting to get better, but you already put an unbreakable death hex on her last week..... so AWKWARD.
despite its many forays into emotional family BS territory, and yes i’m saying it again, Lifetime movie themes and tropes, Pyewacket is pretty good. The brief moments where we actually see a magical ritual being performed are SO good. and the “high school goth/metal/witch/occult kids” look that the filmmakers came up with is hilariously dumb.
i also love the occult expert guy who’s like “you just have to do the exact same ritual you already did, but in REVERSE. “ uhhh ok?? that doesn’t even make sense
anyway, the ending was very agreeable and i was left with a good feeling about Pyewacket. However: if i decided to invoke some sort of dark power against my mom, i’d try to find something with a much cooler name than Pyewacket, no offense.
Teeny bopper horror about a nasty little shit who decides to summon a demon to dispatch her mother due to a mostly inconsequential little argument that the pair had. If that plot summary sounds interesting (and it did to me!), trust me; the film itself does not justify it. The majority of it is taken up at the lead character fretting over what she's done. The film really is far too serious and no fun at all. This is a problem because the situation and characters do not justify a serious piece such as this and I found the 85 minute to be a real drag. I'd really struggle to find anything at all to recommend this for, so I won't. Feel free to skip it!

A slow burning, voyeuristic and horrifying look in to a Mother/Daughter relationship after the death of their Father/Husband. Reminiscent in some ways to recent modern classic THE BABADOOK, PYEWACKET fully embraces its tough storyline and makes it equally heartbreaking and terrifying.
Writer/Director Adam MacDonald has created a realistic and bleak world where a strained relationship is shown and appreciated on both sides , we don't get one dimensional characters here, we get fully rounded ones. Nicole Munoz as daughter Leah is certainly someone to watch and is easy to empathise with despite some angst ridden decisions. Laurie Holden is on her A game as the mother, again empathy is easy as…

"Pyewacket" is what I call a "true horror". That is: a film focused on destroying you, not on providing you with a fun nightmare. A horror that doesn't choose an easy way out, that follows its own rules until the end and that prefers to punch audiences in their stomachs than to explode their ears at every jumpscare.
The realization that the protagonist comes at the end is so horrifying and devastating that our mind refuses to put ourselves in the same place. It's a very dark place to go that no one, not even…
A prime example of why we need a Masters of Horror type show again. This woulda been great at 50 minutes.

This is why I don't fuck with the occult...
A teen performs rituals from a demon book to summon a spirit to kill her mom. The thing the teen has summoned is darker and more dangerous than the girl realized and some shit goes down. This is a very slow paced film that relies on score and visuals to create a creepy atmosphere and push the audience to think about tensions in their families. The film successfully disorients the audience and possesses a third act which I found surprisingly effective.
Recommend to horror fans.
