Promises is a political drama with boring shots and angles and it moves along at a drab pace. It was relatively well-written with real political stakes and benefits from a good performance from Isabelle Huppert.
There is a reason I had seen every other film in Film Forum’s Isabelle Huppert Festival (excluding the documentary about her) except this one. I thought it was because the film was released relatively recently. However, with one just showing (and me moving around my schedule to attend), I can see why this film wouldn’t be high in demand due to its lackluster execution and no exciting scenes.

Typical French social realist drama that has nothing that you haven't seen before. Reda Kateb stole the film for me, the dude is a severely underrated actor.

VENEZIA 78 — FILM #3

Why was (basically) the entire cast of Netflix’s Lupin in this

VENICE 2021 - FIRST LOOK
Immersive, intriguing and poignantly relevant, Les Promesses is a feature that contains stirring social commentary, albeit a film that lacks bite. Huppert puts forwards a strong performance but a character that lacks severe development and depth. It has, however, Reda Kateb that steals the show with an inviting, charismatic and galvanising performance.

A breathtaking and ultra-technical political thriller with the great Isabelle Huppert hypnotic as the mayor of a city that is hard to understand with a rhythm that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. All the workings, the hypocrisy that has a small border between the gangsters and politicians. This movie is perfect for House of Cards fans
-
It is one of the great mysteries of cinema why the French people don't simply solve their problems instead of making mediocre TV movies about them.
-
An exceptional Reda Kateb turns this tight political movie (a french House of cards in 98 minutes, with no Murder and many cigarettes) all made of words, in fight. All arguments are conducted as fights without moving a muscle.
A small town idealist with brains in the big political arena.

Venezia78 Film #1
Biting political thriller surrounding power and corruption with the best intentions. Huppert is obviously good, but Kateb is excellent and the absolute heartbeat of the film. Solid start to Venice.
