Ok sorry for party rocking, I was fully prepared to hate watch this and actually? I fucking liked it. Sue me. I miss the cloying sincerity of the 90s! I miss the sharp, generic perma-autumn of idyllic fictional farmtowns! I miss stories with one character who is the local zucchini farmer, package delivery guy and drive time radio DJ, just to streamline the script! Sock it to me!
I could do without the super insistent score, and truly anyone on earth would be better than Travolta in this role, but damn if it doesn’t commit to a bizzare premise without a hint of irony. Was this the last of the real ones? Goddamit.
Flowers for Phenomenon
Would of been way better if LL Cool J was in this.

I couldn't help but wonder if some guy wrote a really smart screenplay showing how manic depression works and studio execs turned it into this dumb movie. Travolta is manic, then he isn't, then he dies. Sounds like mental illness to me. Oh yeah, also, spoilers.
*Sensual 5-minute haircut montage* "EVERY DAYYYYYY IS A WINDING ROADDDDDD!"

Phenomenon is a 1996 American romantic fantasy drama film directed by Jon Turteltaub, written by Gerald Di Pego, and starring John Travolta, Kyra Sedgwick, Forest Whitaker, Robert Duvall, and Jeffrey DeMunn.
In the film, an amiable, small-town everyman is inexplicably transformed into a genius with telekinetic powers.
From the very start ‘Phenomenon’ shows promise. Set in the outskirts of northern California: George is introduced as an adorkable person with a glaringly average existence. It is not long after that ‘Phenomenon’ bites off more than it can chew.
Unsure of how best to illustrate the gravity of George's transformation, a montage…
Another mid-90's Travolta romance, one that I'd consider to be one of his better films from the decade. Robert Duvall and Forest Whitaker have fantastic performances and add a genuine feel to this touching sci-fi dramance. Like my previous watch, Michael, this is another '96 Travolta film that shines a light on the preciousness on life through a fantastic short-lived miracle-creating character. It also hosts a relevant theme of the general public's fear of someone different, no matter how special or what miracles that person can bring about. I'm not ashamed to say that I like this one, and likewise I'm not ashamed to suggest this one as one of the most unique films with a hugely positive message to…

How did the tumor give him telekinetic powers????
This is such a sweet little movie! John Travolta plays a regular guy who suddenly becomes not so regular after experiencing a bright, blinding light in the sky on his birthday. It's that kind of movie that asks "What if" and introduces a sci-fi element into a normal environment, providing a realistic portrayal of how it could unfold. I love that—sci-fi combined with drama, exploring psychology and human behavior. This movie does it so perfectly. It's interesting, exciting, but most of all, fun. In the '90s, they knew how to make fun movie, and with a lot of heart. There is so little heart in modern movies nowadays, or maybe I'm just feeling nostalgic. And how can I not be when Travolta is this charming? I give this one a 7.6 rating. Very cozy and entertaining. Give me more movies like this please!
Phenomenon just feels like it doesn’t really get going, the story is slow paced, and I couldn’t get onboard with the romance in the film which felt a little forced. John Travolta is good, the story is engaging and has potential, just lacks drive to be better.
I love seeing how George utilizes his new gifts. Scenes where he moves things with his mind, how he learned Portuguese in 20 minutes, or how he predicted the earthquake. Those are the best moments of this film. The love story is fine, but everything else about the movie is better. I've always enjoyed the film though.
