  Don’t be fooled by the direct to Disney+ of it all: David Lowery’s lush and transportive “Peter Pan & Wendy” is neither a creatively bankrupt “live-action remake” in the vein of 2017’s soulless “The Beauty and the Beast,” nor a similarly hollow “live-action” remake in the “style” of 2019’s CGI “The Lion King.”

  For one thing, Lowery’s update doesn’t look horrible — quite the opposite, in fact. For another, it doesn’t cynically adhere to the stale narrative beats that audiences have been conditioned to expect. That’s partially because “remake” isn’t the right word for Lowery’s film, but also because the animated “Peter Pan” that Disney adapted from J.M. Barrie’s novel in 1953 doesn’t have quite the same stranglehold over the collective…

  Ugly-looking, dull, lifeless. The Peter actor is purely a diversity hire since he can't act at all!?!? Milla Jovovich's daughter is decent, a nepobaby who at least tries. The 2003 live action still the best and definitive version, and this one don't come 5% closer.

  Darauf hat die Welt gewartet: nach drei mal mehr, mal weniger okayen Versuchen, die Geschichte vom Jungen, der nicht erwachsen werden will, als Realverfilmung zu inszenieren, kommt nun Anlauf Nummer vier von Indie-Liebling David Lowery, dem natürlich auch nicht viel mehr einfällt als einen in kalten Farben gedrehten Island-Reiseführer mit nervigen Kindern abzuliefern, dem jegliche Phantasie abhanden gekommen ist.

  „Peter Pan & Wendy“ ist Fantasy in hässlich und irritierend dunkel. Die Bilder passen nie zu dem, wie Lowery seine Geschichte erzählt. Neverland sieht aus wie ein Kilkenny Bier-Werbespot, das Versteck der Lost Boys könnte auch direkt am Set von „The Last of Us“ entstanden sein.   I admire the exuberance & artistry David Lowery brought to his passion project, PETER PAN & WENDY, even if it feels uneven & familiar. The kids didn’t impress me but Jude Law’s Captain James Hook is a mixture of pathos & black-hearted gusto while Daniel Hart’s magical score soars.

  I understand why some people were underwhelmed, and I truly wish the runtime was longer, but it's safe to say that I loved this. It's stylish, it's tangible, it's metatextual, it's sincere, the score by Daniel Hart is transcendent, and I'm so beyond mad that it wasn't in theaters. More than anything, it's a touching culmination of so many of the things Lowery has been wrestling with throughout his filmography in the last decade, the passage of time being chiefest among them. That Green Knight and Peter Pan & Wendy double feature is going to be poetry. I'll write much, much more later.
