My Favorite Shapes by Julio Torres
Synopsis
In this multimedia comedy show, Torres explores his favorite shapes, which include a plexiglass square, a triangle, an oval that wishes he were a circle, a self-conscious cactus and a Ferrero Rocher chocolate that Julio is mad at because she left her little skirt at home. The objects are presented via an industrial conveyer belt and serve as a jumping-off point for fantastical stories, anecdotes and jokes.

You simply can’t say it’s been a slow year for Ryan Gosling when he gave one of the best performances of his career as Blue Penguin

The Daisy Duck bit alone has more nuance and depth than most feature length films.

i want so badly to look inside Julio torres’s mind but I’m also intimidated by the power and enchantment I may find there

I can’t really articulate why but watching this made me want to change my life

A deeply weird and disarmingly gentle reinvention of prop-based/non-sequitur comedy, sort of early Demetri Martin for the ASMR era. (now with vaporwave aesthetics!) Torres goes in the opposite direction of the current standup vogue for introspection as TED Talk-style addressing of issues, ending up somewhere wildly conceptual and yet no less personally revealing. Through sharing his passion/fixation for imbuing strange little objects with a complex inner life, we come to know something about how he sees the world. The rhythms of this are also oddly soothing - the whirr of the conveyer belt, the ritual of removing the object from the conveyer followed by the thoughtful reveal of each shape to the audience/camera, the motion of his glittering hands across…
