A terrifying, blood-curdling story about a working-class woman who is abused, tortured, starved and neglected by a monstrous misogynist psychopath who is so pathologically obsessed with a skewed elitist idea of the purity of the English language that he's willing to completely wreck people's lives over it. She eventually finds her entire being controlled and dominated by him, so much so that even when she finally tries to escape she can't go back to the way she was... and might not even have been able to leave him at all. "Where the devil are my slippers" indeed.

Most of Audrey’s acting career was pretending to be in love with the oldest, most misogynist, ancient, dusty, saggy, musty ass rude men who can’t even sing!
Even as a child I knew that himbo freddy was such a better option! Freddy listens! Freddy sings! Freddy is unemployed and has time 2 love!
The new ending I’ve made up in my head is Professor Eliza’s Chocolate Shop and School of Manners for Gifted Children No Men Necessary

its a really good movie if you read it as a story about two gay men adopting a daughter (in this sense, even better than Asquith's Pygmalion with Pickering being so heavily gay 'coded' in this) but. i cannot review this without stating that the decision to dub jeremy brett's singing voice set the gay rights movement back several years, if not decades
