And then he comes towards you... the moves of a jungle cat. Although you quite correctly sense that he is... gay... like most devastatingly handsome single men of his age are, you think... what the hell. Life goes on. Maybe there won't be marriage... maybe there won't be sex... but, by God, there'll be dancing."
i would give anything to look like 90s julia roberts with her unruly red curls but alas,
i’m a fan of the unlikeable protagonist. i love this movie for having the nerve to write a romantic comedy with a protagonist that is not only unlikeable but whose actions are never framed as being okay. some rom-coms try to pull this off (e.g.: something borrowed) and fail. what makes my best friend’s wedding work is everyone’s awareness that julianne is constantly making every worse possible decision and that she’s doing it because she’s in love.
the staple of the romcom or any rom is the belief that we’d do anything for love. and in so many of these genres the main character does things that are questionable, creepy or downright wrong and they’re rewarded with true love and…
Brilliant move to create a romantic comedy but do it from the perspective of the sociopathic villain who’s trying to sabotage the main relationship.
