A brutal and haunting decent into a bloody scum soaked streets of insanity land with Zoë Lund and Abel Ferrara as our guides. Gritty, grimy, and violently disturbing, Ms. 45 is my favorite Ferrara, favorite revenge story, and possibly my favorite nyc scuzzfest grime jam along with Maniac. Zoë Lund is just incredible as she dominates the screen with a stellar performance making sure Disgusting garbage people getting what they deserve.

Where to even begin here? Revisiting this, I'm totally astonished at how much is packed in here and how often this is still regarded as "great" genre-schlock exploitation, but it never feels like an exploitation picture, it's only a means to an end. This is so loaded to the brim with ideas (even more impressive considering that it comes after the almost animalistic Driller Killer) and so tightly condensed, yet I think it's virtually impossible to miss all the films key points.
As Thana's landlord says - "you look like a phantom!" Two consecutive sexual assaults begin a process of de-personalization and de-humanization which Thana flips into the de-humanization of the men around her as a coping mechanism. Kitchen utensils…

Gimme a bullet to bite on and I’ll make believe it’s you. Abel Ferrara is a prankster at this point in his career, seeing just how many buttons he can push and how many bridges he can burn down, but he does so with a real attention to the kinds of fires he wants to start. In Woody Allen’s Manhattan (1979) there’s an image of young love with the Queensboro bridge in frame accompanied with the kind of music Woody Allen likes, and Ferrara recreates the image in Ms. 45 but makes it a violent one, as if to say this is my New York City. This is a film for the litter that people ignore, the bugs people step on, and for the lives that have been ruined by people who don’t pay attention to the kinds of fires they want to start.

As impressive a mix of grindhouse sleaze and art film trappings as Taxi Driver, but Ferrara is so deep in the industry lower depths he knows there's no reason to compomise. Also Lund performance is high in the pantheon.

“Ms .45” shoots a straight shot down the line between exploitation and fetishization. And just like its leading character; the film does. not. miss.
Abel Ferrara’s rape revenge flick achieves more tact of tone in its less than 80 minutes of runtime than some directors reach through decades of their careers. While disturbing in setup, Ferrara does not linger on the suffering (or worse - objectification) in the work’s inciting incidents.
Instead, he basks in the self-realized autonomy of Zoë Lund’s “Ms .45,” a mute seamstress.
Taking inspiration from the likes of “Lady Snowblood” and women-led blaxploitation pictures like “Coffy,” Ferrara makes no attempt to girl boss-up his leading lady. She is a product of the corrupt and violent world…
