Featuring performances by popular artists of the 1960s, this concert film highlights the music of the 1967 California festival. Although not all musicians who performed at the Monterey Pop Festival are on film, some of the notable acts include the Mamas and the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, the Who, Otis Redding, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix's post-performance antics -- lighting a guitar on fire, breaking it and tossing a part into the audience -- are captured.

My favourite image in this movie is a reaction shot of Mama Cass who is extremely fucked up upon having seen Janis Joplin perform, because if I had been in her shoes I would've been in even worse shape witnessing what can only be described as the pure fucking power of voice.

Pennebaker, infrequently cutting back to audience reaction, grants the viewer an ultimate level of immersion, distilling motion and performance and sound into abstract, angelic, orgasmic snapshots. The obligatory audience moments, entirely consisting of festivalgoers utterly losing their shit, tripping balls, and taken hostage by the music, then become both a formal shock to the system and a reaffirmation of just how fucking good these artists were, and how lucky they were to see them in the flesh, beating and breathing.

Undiluted footage of the first summer of love, scattered montages capturing a festival that’s more than worthy of standing ovation. Otis Redding gives his soul to the crowd, Janis Joplin breaks the vocal stratosphere, The Who fly into a stage-smashing frenzy, Ravi Shankar entrances Americans with Indian sound and Jimi Hendrix dry-humps his guitar before setting it alight. Monterey Pop is a total sensory overload, the beginnings of the hippie movement coming to full fruition on camera as shapes and colours collide in a technicoloured explosion of talent. This is easily up there with The Last Waltz and Stop Making Sense as one of the great concert documentaries ever put to screen, also serving as definitive proof that it sucks to have been born any time after.

Janis in her sparkly dress over her sparkly pants, stamping and kicking and wailing on the verge of tears or over, something that hovers and stammers like a hummingbird suddenly aware of summer traffic in the wild median, something that is spring torrents of what was just ice, broken and unaware of the territories of things or too late for them, something that can't ever be speech

Don't mind me as I am clearly going through my rock and roll era.
Every performance was great but if I had to pick my three standouts it would be:
1. Janis Joplin
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. That absolutely insane tabla and sitar finale.
4. And I guess I have to make it 4 since I can't not include Otis Redding, sorry I don't make the rules.
