I've seen French resistance films, and a couple on the Dutch resistance, but first time up for the Norweigans. Really well made, great acting, the lead guy is fabulous as he is in Headhunters. A very worthy addition to the 'resistance fighter' genre.
Norway, still the only country I've not seen a shit movie from.

Max Manus: Man of War was great. I think it portrayed the psychological and emotional toll of war on an individual with incredible depth. The film captures not only the heroism and daring of Max Manus as part of the Norwegian resistance during World War II but also the profound personal cost of his actions. It delves into themes of survivor's guilt, trauma, and the struggle to reintegrate into society after experiencing the horrors of war.
The performances were powerful, especially Aksel Hennie's portrayal of Max, which brought a raw vulnerability to the character. The cinematography and attention to historical detail also made the story feel authentic and immersive. It’s not just a war movie; it’s a deeply human story about resilience, sacrifice, and the lasting scars of conflict.

Depending on where you live and how you were brought up will determine how you view world history, especially when it concerns WWII. Although the second world war ended almost 75 years ago, most people will have relatives who remember the horror of war and historians have documented almost every event, whether it be glorious failure, unbridled barbarity, or heroic deeds from freedom fighters from many different countries. Tyranny and oppression breeds heroes as well as villains, and although many books have been written, mostly about well known American, French, or English heroes, Hollywood has shunned most WWII heroes that haven't been from those countries. There's been the odd exception to the rule, such as Defiance about The Bielski Brothers…

I had never even heard of Max Manus before watching this film (sorry Norway) but am very glad I found this fascinating film about how he spent the war as a saboteur for the Norwegian resistance. It's a bit of history I knew very little of and the bravery of those in the resistance should be remembered. Like L'armée des ombres it shows an unromanticised view of those who fought for their country which is something to be admired in those who made the films.

"Nothing is as pathetic as a soldier that no one needs anymore."
- Maximo Manus

“Who the hell stops drinkig in the middle of a war?”
Max Manus is an impressive WWII-movie and having in mind that it’s a Norwegian production, it’s even more impressive. Admittedly, the opening is quite odd where the film doesn’t really get going until Max is stationed at the training camp to become a saboteur – but the way there is a long start where we don’t get to really know him. At the camp, it’s quite lacking of substance as we barely see him train at all but when the film finally throws him out into the real world of the nazi-occupied Norway to become a saboteur, it’s enjoyable excitement.
When the film has really start going, it keeps…

Not vibing with this World War II film from Norway. It was bland and boring. But the main sin is the main actor; the filmmaker could have found a better and more charismatic actor than the Max Manus we have here.

Probably one of the best Norwegian films I have seen
