Absolute schlock lunacy. Goes absurdly hard for no reason and thank god it does; my dream late-era Silent Hill movie adaptation (complimentary) in far more ways than expected, capturing the essence of what makes those maligned games so appealing to me in spite of their critical consensus. Here, similarly, Macabre marries that overbearing boondock gravitas with overwrought psychological externalizations, resulting in a near-outrageous descent into madness that just barely misses being comical and firmly lands in a deranged-ness instead. The horror is then less in the images we see than the very notion (and prospect) of phenomenon itself. Insane.
When you think you’re watching the Indonesian Addams Family but turns out to be the Jakarta Chainsaw Massacre.
Indonesians over here are proving they can also get “extreme” with their horror. The gore and cinematography, along with some of the villain’s sadism, were very reminiscent of the grungy, dirty look of films such as Inside. The performances were serviceable, and Daanish really did a nice job selling the stoic and cold-blooded nature of this monster in human flesh. The story was fine, though a bit too predictable and it’s one of those horrors where the people need to act stupid for the plot to move forward, which was a bit annoying at times.
All in all, if you enjoy your horror with some grit and violence, this should satisfy you.

Why yes I watched — and thoroughly enjoyed — this intensely gory, bombastically brutal Indonesian horror film about a cannibalistic family on Thanksgiving. This is what can happen when you spend the holidays solo. Julie Estelle and Shareefa Daanish really bring it. I had a good fucking time.
Blood-red dreams filled with putrid moments
With child, no matter
Into the void and onwards to the beyond
History will decide the here and now
Breathe faster, the moment is coming
Be quick, the danger is now
Indonesian torture slasher Rumah Dara starts out like a typical Texas Chainsaw clone, with a group of kids larking around and driving in their minivan, and continues some of its themes throughout. Where it differs though is in the execution (mind the pun), as most scenes are shot in well lit rooms that allow every scratch, stab and break to be delivered in glorious Technicolor.
And then there's the sound design. I didn't cotton onto it at first, but there's this low drone…
Everything will be covered in blood.
,,Macabre‘‘ is another 2000s horror film with elements of torture porn, cannibalism and splatter. And thanks to ,,The Raid‘‘ films, Indonesian films like this have found resonance in the western world.
In the first 30 minutes, ,,Macabre’‘ reminded me a lot of director Eli Roth's films. In the further course, you can also feel the influence of the french extreme films like ,,Inside‘‘, ,,High Tension’‘ and ,,Martyrs‘‘ a lot. What is shown here is sometimes even as hard, brutal and merciless as these films.
All the evil family members were scary and great villains. Especially the mother. The disturbing and vile approach makes it a very entertaining experience for fans and some of the fantastic…
Well, hi there.
Let's travel to Indonesia. (nevermind that two characters actually want to leave the country.) It's beautiful and seems fun and hey, since we're in a good mood let's pick up this stranger too and give her a ride home. She seems nice!
- but this is of course a horror movie so that's not going to end well.
Alright! This was sleazy fun.
Gosh, lots of practical effects, the matriarch is 🔥. Absolutely obsessed with her deep voice. (which I learned is not her real voice. Aw.) The deaths are pretty good. So much blood. So much violence. So unhinged!
I have to say that this movie is rather mediocre but the fun is guaranteed and also…
Indonesian horror is dope and I love it when there is a hint of supernatural twist in a slasher set up.
Macabre is about a group of people travelling by car to the airport, when along the road, they meet a beautiful woman named Maya who says she has been robbed and needs a ride home, then she invites them for dinner and these people are drugged because there is a cannibal angle going on here.
Now the plot here is simple with relentless violence and gore, Shareefa Daanish as dara is a great antagonist with amazing dialogue delivery she is able to creep you out without doing anything over the top from the beginning itself, with a hint of a supernatural twist this movie is great specially for people who like movies such as inside (2007), there is a reason why I said inside you'll know its fucked up.
Blood. Bleeding wounds, bloodied shirts, blood on walls, bloody birth, bloody limbs, beefsteak. Blood splattered, poured, sprayed everywhere, puddles of blood at every step, there's so much greasy blood on the floor it's like trying to walk on ice. The color red is featured prominently, clothes, lamps, wine, furniture... blood!
A group of friends almost run over a lost and frightened girl who, she says, was assaulted and robbed. Even though she's acting a tiny bit weird they decide to drive her home. Once there, a place deep in the woods far removed from society and, by the looks of it, the present time, they are introduced to the girl's mother who thanks them for their kindness and invites them…
Tbh, I've known about this film for a long time, but I was too afraid to watch it. In the past, I didn't really like horror gore films where every scene was endlessly bloody, but now I'm trying to watch this🏃🏻♀️
"You.. you've tasted it. TASTY RIGHT?!"— Dara.
Macabre (Rumah Dara) is one of those tasty blood-gushing psychological tortures in three neat and tidy acts. The plot is simple and nothing to worry about. Also all the cast are great, but Shareefa Daanish is especially outstanding!👏🏼 Overall, this is a classic story where the point isn't revealed until the end, and the suspense, sadistic pain, and surreal nastiness doesn't stop for a second.
