They keep pronouncing Marmee as "Mar-MEE" and I feel like I'm going insane

katharine hepburn as jo march,,, call it what it is... lesbianism!!!

every time katharine hepburn screamed “CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS!” it took a year off my life.

୨୧ no casting will ever be as iconic as katharine as jo march, and no one can change my mind about it.

extremely close to the sentimental story i held in my mind while reading the book as a young teenager, cukor maintains a stately warmth to this adaptation while quietly insisting on the depression-era solidarity of the titular quartet -- the film is never too precocious without a reminder of the sacrifice that each sister makes in a time of hardship. cukor gives a lion's share to hepburn's jo march, as there is no other actress in history more perfectly suited to play that character, but he does a good job of balancing her among all the other characters -- this is less of a self-actualizing romance than the 2019 gerwig version, but it is overall suffused in a victorian romantic-realist…

Greta Gerwig’s version is so deeply embedded in both my heart and my memory that any other version seems like a faint but quant echo. Even my beloved Katharine doesn’t match Saoirse, which is something I never thought I’d write!

There is nothing little in spirit about Katherine Hepburn in the 1933 film adaption of “Little Women.”
As the rebellious young writer Jo March, Hepburn, like her character, has a heart so powerful that it beats to a rhythm decades ahead of its own time. This is apparent not only in the context of the story, but also in the presentation of the film itself.
Surrounded by a cast hewing more to the period-typical form of acting and feminine representation, to watch Hepburn parade about the film in men’s dress and with her assertive low voice is to watch a time traveler. Hepburn as Jo is nearly so dominant and self-assured from the outset, it nearly undermines the journey of…

katharine hepburn was so charming and charismatic it’s unbelievable. she could pull off absolutely anything. she’s dressed as a man and singing a silly song, and sobbing her eyes out the next moment, and somehow it works. she was a revelation.

I really liked this version of the story I think largely because the performances were so incredibly charming. Katharine Hepburn was such a great Jo - she was headstrong and funny and powerful. And Douglass Montgomery as Laurie was perfect and one of my favorite versions of him. Their chemistry was great to watch cause they really felt like that kind of cute friendship that could lead to a romance but wouldn’t. I still think this version skimmed over too much of Amy, but overall I really liked this adaptation.

Katherine Hepburn is Jo and Jo is gay.

Feels like home. Despite the overcooked sentimentalism of the 30s, George Cukor’s Capra-esque Hollywood formula renders the first feature take of Little Women a warm and cosy affair, even if it is a bit sickly-sweet at times. On the technical side things are still shifting into gear, with offbeat editing and contrived line deliveries making it feel that little bit too much like theatre, but it’s a worthwhile early RKO entry all the same. Katharine Hepburn is a joy to watch, as ever.

"I like good strong words that mean something!"
The March sisters, Jo (Katharine Hepburn), Amy (Joan Bennett), Beth (Jean Parker) and Meg (Frances Dee) help their Mother keep the household together while their father is off fighting in the Civil War. Despite some hardship, it's a happy time that Jo in particular wants to hold onto. But change in life is inevitable, and when love enters the picture for some of the sisters, the happy world they share with one another may come to an end.
Little Women is an extremely charming coming of age story, made all the more so by Hepburn's performance as the spirited Jo. She's pitch perfect and is compelling for every second she's on screen…
