Young graduate student Jane Chase becomes the new assistant to an eccentric zoology professor at the remote home he shares with two brilliant chimpanzees and an elderly orangutan butler named Link. But when one of the chimps is found dead and the professor mysteriously disappears, Link becomes dangerously aggressive towards Jane. I was not ready for how effective a thriller about a suit wearing, cigar smoking chimpanzee would be. Richard Franklin turns something that could be extremely goofy into something tense and gripping. The zany score by Jerry Goldsmith is delightful and De Roche's madman fingerprints are all over this cluster cuss work of art.
But the star of this Hitchcockian circus is the titular "Link". Truly sinister work from Locke the Orangutan. His performance comes off as seasoned actor not a trained animal. I would rank this villainous animal portrayal up there with Ben from Willard (2003). How most of his reactions seem like real responses and not him looking off camera to be cued from a trainer is mind boggling.
This is a special movie, something we will probably never see again.

This is pretty much the only good killer monkey movie in my opinion (excluding things like King Kong, of course). I know that Monkey Shines and Shakma stans are gonna be upset with that statement. Sorry not sorry though, those movies are kind of boring.

I didn't know what to expect from this. I knew almost nothing going in. I ended up loving this wacky ass film. This stands at the top of the killer primate sub-genre. Link is a butler at an ape learning compound. Elisabeth Shue shows up and all of a sudden, Link goes loco and starts fucking shit up. The action escalates and by the end, goes completely bonkers. The Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack was whimsical and fantastic. The cinematography was surprisingly great. This film needs a resurgence.

You’d either have to be a madman or a master to successfully hinge your creature-feature horror-comedy(?) on a suit-wearing cigar-smoking ape, and said film not turning into a joke or disaster. Given the varied films of Richard Franklin’s hot streak, he might be both and Link might be the weirdest of that run. The premise is simple - Elizabeth Shue’s Jane arrives at professor Terrence Stamp’s seaside manor to assist his studies of chimp intelligence, professor goes missing, apes get increasingly sinister and rowdy - yet the execution is anything but.
Forty minutes of compounding set-up followed by an hour of Hitchcockian suspense and pay-offs: the bizarre interplay between Shue and the titular Link (plus other chimps Voodoo and Imp)…
Only thing Link was guilty of was rocking the hardest fits of all time. I support animal rights and animals wrongs. This movie could’ve been like 45 minutes though.
One of the most memorable video covers from back in the day, (the one with Link in his little suit looking creepy holding the lit match) I'm still trying to figure out why I never rented it. I think even back then I realised this wasn't strictly going to be the out and out horror the cover promised (despite it always ending up in that section of the shop) and I was right, it really isn't. Still, had I known that first crush Elizabeth Shue was in this? I'm not sure it would've mattered what genre this was tbh.

I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to watch Link, a movie about an Ape Butler who used to work in the Circus and loves smoking cigars who then gets increasingly violent when he finds out he’s going to get put down.
Really good Ape Acting in this. Link has dangerous eyes and an even more dangerous heart. You can tell. You can sense evil in that ape.
Way too long for the type of movie it is but hey, I had a good time.
The touching love story between a girl and mad killer ape or what's civilization anyway? Pretty much what one should expect from a Richard Franklin-Everettt De Roche joint: tons of clever ideas under ludicrous surface, great matter of fact humor, nastiness and directed for maximum tension. Limited only somewhat for indiferent non-Ape acting (outside from Shue who makes for a fine screamer).
It's about time I watched a horror movie about a murderous elderly orangutan butler named Link. Out of all the horrors about animals and insects that kill, I'm numbering down horror movies and the animal kingdom. There has to be a horror for every animal out there, right?
This is from director Richard Franklin, who directed Psycho II (written by legend Tom Holland) and Roadgames, so I had some high hopes before going in, regardless of the silly premise. The best thing about chimps and orangutans is that they can act! Plus, they look cute wearing suits and whatnot. As long as they don't kill me or throw their poo at me, I'm happy to see them.
