Was disappointed when my viewing companion Mort Rifkin told me that he was glad Bunuel "outgrew the childish provocations of his early work" by the time he got to "more mature work" like The Exterminating Angel.
In the beginning, there were scorpions. Then, people sail thousands of miles in order to worship at the feet of skeletons. A young couple tries to fuck, and this is very offensive for some reason. This is the foundation of society.
Fast-forward to the present day, and sex is everywhere in advertising but still nonetheless prohibited. Society tells you to want sex but not to actually have it. Bunuel looks like he's having a good time with this one. From what I've seen of his work, it seems like he's either teetering on the verge of complete obfuscation or beating the audience over the head. This falls into the latter category. Though this sometimes works for him (see Viridiana), sometimes, like El, it seems a bit too blunt. Here it's closer to the latter than the former, though the absurdity of the film makes it easier to take.

These surrealist films always have backstories that are better than the films. On the release of L'age D'or, the anti-semite rightwingers destroyed theaters and the church threatened excommunication to the distributor (adorable how those two entities have always worked together on common goals)
Like all surrealist films, it confused the hell outta me so I just say it's cinema made to feel like a dream and call it a day.

A crazy journey, a super important film to cinema in general. I truly enjoyed it, but don't ask me what it's about… It's like every one of my favorite directors made a French film in the 30's, and it's amazing. definitely will rewatch it someday.
