“Je t’aime” is the story of a man who attempts suicide, and is chosen to participate in a scientific trial only to be undertaken by those comfortable with the idea of perishing. The test allows him to travel back in his own past - one minute at a time.

The acting and writing are typically French: rather pompous and figurative, which isn't to my taste in this case but which I don't really dislike either. Everyone pulls their weight, particularly in terms of the performances. But, the film's actual stars are the stunning cinematography and production design that goes on behind the scenes, with several minimalist designs that stick with you long after the credits roll, like the cushion or the contraption where our protagonist inevitably ends up having his existential reflections. Futurist proto-Eternal Sunshine sci-fi drama with a dash of surrealism that may or may not has inspired Tarkovsky's Mirror. Memories fragmented, repeated, rearranged, and recontextualized until they're all indistinguishable - as if one needs another reason why Resnais is a genius. I too relate to the protagonist because I would also be severely depressed if Olga Georges-Picot were gone from my life.
There is a man. In dreams, a clawfoot bathtub. At night, records spin; she smiles in her sleep. Beaches, tides breaking on a broken strand—I, seven years bad luck. Morning time brings out the worst in us. There is a mouse. A millennium of reflection. On afternoons, the bluely muted sunbeams blister, transforming surreptitiously. She has me wash her, nothing more. Again she smiles. The gun goes off and I fall everywhere. Not her, her. Sinking into the past, submerged in remembrance. Move the needle to the right. The little white mouse can now come back up only for enough air to keep from suffocating. It’s not a straight line we span, but a scribble.

Okay, this might have influenced Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or 12 Monkeys, but Je T’Aime Je T’Aime fails to wow me, despite its pioneering status in cinema history. This feels awfully like an extended version of La Jetée, which only proves why certain movie ideas only work as shorts.
Similar to Godard's Alphaville, Je T’Aime Je T’Aime manages to convey grand sci-fi stories via minimalistic approaches, which is highly applaudable and innovative. After a cut-to-the-chase intro, we are immediately introduced to a kick-ass futuristic set design, and the "memories" of the protagonist in scattered order, which is the selling point of this slow-burn.
The audience is expected to piece together the motive behind the protagonist's suicide attempt, but…
I need to find that minute.
'Je t'aime, je t'aime' is the perfect representation of how going deeper into your past can bury you in it, making it impossible for you to breathe and die eventually.
Is there anything more haunting than reliving the moments and memories you wish to forget, being forced to look into the broken mirror of your past that you never wanted to face again, all those things you can't stop thinking about but do not wish to revisit or explore deeper?
The performances and direction was great and the bit of humour, the dialogues aaahhh the dialogues.
Also, I agree with humans were made to satisfy the needs of cats.
A film as abstract as Marienbad and as disturbing as Muriel. Yet it's rarely ever mentioned in the same breath as those movies. Resnais' associative editing underlines the themes of time and identity as a man who survived an attempted suicide over the loss of his lover ends up in a time travel experiment. Once it goes haywire, he starts reliving personal events of the recent past. This is Resnais' own La Jetee, equally ambitious and spectacular. And as devastating.
