CIFF 2017: film #3
listen.... the last 15 minutes of this filled me with so much anxiety that i thought i was going to COLLAPSE and the last two shots ALONE made me raise my rating half a star
DIANE KRUGER GIVES A PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME!!!
It's easy to see why she won best performance at Cannes. I actually feel sorry for anyone else who has been in a movie this year, because they will never be able to top this performance either this year or in their whole entire career.
AFI 2017: film #6 (first seen at CIFF)
buckle up kids because diane kruger is COMING for that oscar nomination
Damn, I really wanted to love this. An intense thriller/drama about grief with political undertones and an incredibly talented lead actress? Sign me up. Unfortunately, the film essentially amounts to Diane Kruger doing her absolute best to hold up a flimsy narrative. The first act is easily the strongest, throwing you headfirst into a gut-wrenching scenario defined by confusion, shock, and emptiness. However, it starts to become apparent that Akin's screenplay isn't all too capable of exploring its topics in the depth needed to make the story work, as the grief remains too surface level and the conflicts and politics too black and white. Don't get me wrong, Diane Kruger knows how to kill a reaction shot. I just wish…
my soul is rattled and i feel like i'm being crushed under the weight of this film. i wish i had something constructive to say but i'm so deeply affected that i can't for the life of me think objectively right now. diane kruger is a hurricane and her anger, hurt, heartache and frustration sweep you away. i won't be seeing this again any time soon but i can't recommend it enough. it's so profoundly necessary.
AFI Fest 2017: Movie #11
"The fight goes on."
Two killer lead performances in a row. Diane Kruger is phenomenal here, carrying the full weight of this heavy, heavy story. I was so frustrated for her character, engrossed in every scene. This is a truly remarkable film -- Fatih Akin's direction puts us right in the moment, visceral and striking with every movement. Be warned: this is brutal. It's stressful and angering, but in the end, we're left with what feels right. In the Fade is a thrilling watch that's tragically relevant to where we are today. Holy shit.
Rating: 84/100
My fav GoldenGlobes moment is when In the Fade won Best Foreign Film and I knocked over a glass. #fatihAkin #inthefade #dianekruger
This film pretty much is three different movies rolled into one. First we're wallowing in grief after the protagonist's husband and child get killed in a terrorist attack. Then gears are changed and we have to witness the unbearable discrepancy of a court of law which ultimately can't deliver justice. Finally, we watch a phenomenal Diane Kruger fuelled by vengeance.
What this film does most cleverly is how it plays a wicked game with your perception. We first meet the husband as an inmate in prison. And yes, like the inept police officers, I was also wondering why the family had such a huge house. Ultimately, none of this should matter, as the man and his kid were killed by…
