As a child, writer/director Erika Etangsalé had a view of her father as a distant, reserved, even taciturn man. Now, when she asks Jean-René to talk to her on camera, he tells her his backstory for the first time, which proves to be cathartic for both of them.
Now retired after working (in semi-skilled jobs?) in France since he was 17, it is a story of forced exile from his birthplace on the island of Réunion and the controversial activities…

vu dans le cadre du decolonial film festival, un des meilleurs films que j'ai vu de l'année !! tellement fort dans la représentation d'une douleur héritée dont on ne connait pas vraiment la cause mais dont on saisit qu'elle a un lien avec un territoire, avec une histoire et avec la colonisation (et ses rejetons / le BUMIDOM). le fait que le documentaire ait été co-créé avec son père qui partage la même sensibilité pour le cinéma et pour l'image…

Very refreshing approach to the subject matter. It poses a series of questions (what is haunting me? what are these dreams I inherited from my father? why am I drawn back to Reunion Island?), and then answers them poetically, with scattered moments of life and mythic images.

Mon premier visionnage était en 2022. Certainement en Février. J'étais au lycée, ma dernière année et je n'avais jamais encore quitté l'Océan Indien. Nous voilà en fin 2023, et cela fait 1 mois que j'ai quitté La Réunion pour la deuxième fois. Et je pense que ce documentaire, ne pouvait résonner aussi fort en moi, qu'aujourd'hui.
Cette douleur intrinsèque à notre sang réunionnais, grandit à chaque fois que l'on quitte l'île, les siens et que loin on se retrouve à…
en vrai j'aurais sûrement aimé ce film si je l'avais vu dans de bonnes conditions mais là il était 0h30 c'était le dernier de la projection et on nous avait pas dit qu'il durait 52 MINUTES (techniquement ça reste un court métrage mais tu le colles pas à côté de trucs de dix minutes comme si de rien n'était)
du coup je le note pas et j'espère le revoir un jour pour l'apprécier comme il se doit
there's a section near the end that recounts a Réunionese legend of two lovers escaping their slavery and it's extremely beautiful in both image and heft; it also reminded me of ongoing conversations surrounding acts of revolutionary suicide, and the ways these actions are contextualized, erased, forgotten, and buried. liberals and their ilk like to tell us that political self-death is to be reported on and covered carefully in the media, without fanfare and detail so as to stifle "copycats." here, Etangsalé and her father prove what utter bullshit we know this to be.
The director has serious conversations with her father for the first time. He discusses his young adulthood, how he left Reunion Island on a free work program to France. As an adult, he reckons with the fact that this was colonialism, that he was tricked into leaving a kind of paradise for Europe. Shots of the island in his memory are black and white, showing the place's beauty but giving the audience a sense of longing.
