Images from the Playground
Synopsis
In the early fifties Ingmar Bergman got himself a cine-camera, a 9.5 mm Bell & Howell, which he often used both privately and in his work. "Bilder från lekstugan" ("Images from the Playground") embark on these films, giving a diverse representation of one of the greatest artists in cinema.

My Journey into the Films of Ingmar Bergman -- Part 9 of 62
Finally we come to the first supplemental piece of this huge Criterion Collection boxset, after eight feature films by Bergman, Bilder från Lekstugan ["Images From the Playground"]. This 29-minute short -- composed of shots from the director on cine-camera, a 9.5mm Bell & Howell -- is technically directed by documentarian Stig Björkman, who apparently has four films in this collection, and comes as an extra on the disc for Summer With Monika.
Along with the "home movie" elements, restored beautifully, there are interviews and reactions from filmmakers, actors, and peers. It begins with an introduction by Martin Scorsese commenting on his…

This fantastic short is assembled from Ingmar Bergman's home movies he personally shot on the set of his 50's and 60's films, covering the period from Summer with Monika through Winter Light. Martin Scorsese introduces the piece, as the 9.5mm footage was restored by his World Cinema Foundation in glorious HD. The silent footage is accompanied by a magical score that brings the past to life, as well as being overlaid with archival interviews with Bergman, and new interviews with his muses Harriet Andersson and Bibi Andersson.

Pronto, agora eu quero ver a foto da Harriet Anderson do Bergman pelado.
DVD Versátil/Folha Coleção Grandes Diretores do Cinema.

Very cool to see this "home video" footage that Bergman shot during downtime on various film sets. Crazy to think that all of these classic Bergman actors that were being filmed had no idea that even that footage would still be watched like 60 years later. Loved seeing what Bergman liked to train his camera on for his personal videos, and almost all of the time it's a beautiful woman, and for this doc it's typically Harriet Andersson or Bibi Andersson.

Ingmar would have been such a funny gremlin to observe doing his thing.
About to sound like an old man here, but it's something of a shame to think he wouldn't have been without heavy scrutiny for his relationships if he were beginning his career in the modern day. I understand he did receive criticism at the time, but it's so wild that his three main love affairs with actresses stayed with him throughout his career despite the tangled web of romances.
Could watch personal film montages of people all day. Something so wonderful about extraordinary lives recorded during their most ordinary moments.

uggghhhhh bergman is so inspiring so genius so important
-
Restored material thanks to Scorsese & the World Film Foundation. Ingmar Bergman’s home movies shot with a 9.5mm Bell & Howell camera which apparently he took everywhere, generally capturing behind the scenes footage of the cast and crew. Accompanied by archival audio footage & recent interviews with Harriet Andersson & Bibi Andersson (Bibi very forthright indeed).
Extra on the ‘Summer With Monica’ BluRay in the Bergman box set from Criterion.

"You can only get people to give their best by making them love what they're doing." --Ingmar Bergman
Who knew Bergman's sets were such a laugh riot? I suppose he and his actors had to release the tension somehow.
Included as a supplement on Criterion's release of Summer with Monica.

Another gift from Scorsese.
