perhaps the best contemporary feminist film in China????
A commercial film? Yes.
A comedy? Yes.
But it’s not just a new type of chick flick — it’s simply a film for half of the world’s population.
also really love the mother-daughter relationship depicted in this film, come across a beautifully written comment from Weibo, so touching:
"So many inheritance relationships in patriarchal systems—sons inherit their fathers' surnames, houses, and wealth, all of which are external possessions. But daughters inherit something truly belonging to their mothers: their reading habits, writing talent, sense of style, menstrual cycles, menopause, and even severe myopia..."
-
Easy to understand the success of this romantic drama, given its nuanced handling of contemporary social surrounding the place of women in a patriarchal world, bringing forcefully to the imagination the vision of a world that takes for granted the reality of the alternative and the conditions for its possibility.
Yet, in terms of what brings this to life, it is the coordinates of pre-code comedies, such as Design for Living, Hawksian works such as Bringing Up Baby and the works of Lubitsch and their slapstick that allow for it to feel tapped into a history of societal confrontation that can be self-aware without being histrionic, affective while eschewing the cloying and intelligent but never didactic. And what other film…

the best chinese film in 2024. i couldn’t help but smile at so many moments—this movie is like a metaphor for our generation. the structure’s all over the place, but it flows like breath, scattered yet still resonant, like it’s pulling at something deep inside. we’re all breathing this in, sharing it together. just thinking about the fact that this film exists and knowing more like it will come, reflecting our generation, makes it feel so rare and soft, like something precious we can hold onto.
this film keep reminds of that line, “I don’t want the wisdom of deep love or your meaning,” but instead, choosing to just stand by, observing love before it even begins, before it even…

I flew to China just to watch this, and it absolutely delivered. A sharp, grounded take on modern feminist comedy, with slice-of-life dialogue that thoughtfully unpacks themes of womanhood and feminism. It’s high-level stuff—seeing through life’s tedium and joy, embracing both. People compare it to Barbie, but this goes deeper. The characters may lean archetypal, but Her Story finds warmth and resonance in the everyday, far more moving in its quiet humanity.
-
