SYNOPSIS: A search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.
This third installment in the series provides us with more of the stuff we saw in the first 2; some decent kills, plenty of creative beheadings and a few good moments of tension.
I love 1 and 2, but oof... this thing doesn’t even feel like a movie... just scenes of convention cameos and impressive yet uninteresting gore barely tied together a boring plot and an over serious vibe that lacks any of the charm from the first two films. I know a lot of work was put into this and I appreciate that but this is my least favorite in the franchise by a WIDE margin which is a bummer because I was really riding the high of a great Victor Crowley revisit and was totally expecting to finally gel with this movie.
I feel like Sid Haig’s cameo in this is almost (if I remember correctly) shot for shot his cameo in Creature... which is just a riff on his opening from House of 1,000Corpses.
I dunno guys.. this is the third time I’ve watched this movie and I don’t think this is for me. That’s me putting it nicely.
The set-up for Hatchet III deviates just enough from the previous movies that it doesn't feel like a complete rehash. It is leaps and bounds better than the second movie for me, falling just below the first one. The characters are just more fun. The gore is about on par.
I love that this franchise has cameos from genre regulars (Sid Haig ♥️).
These movies are just so much fun and I really need to revisit them more often. I like this one almost as much as the second one and honestly, having Caroline Williams in a lead role really helps because I adore her. Her accent is wonderful and fits into this movie perfectly.
The comedy is toned down but the gore is just as strong as ever. My favorite kill here is probably Zach Galligan’s just because of the way his head looks after it comes back through the hole in the boat. Now before that happens, he is just as cute as ever even if his character is an annoying little fucker.
The swamp gorefest continues... with toned down comedy, and a super serious Mary Jane (sigh... I’m not the biggest DH fan). It’s still loaded with crazy kills and enough blood to fill numerous buckets, but i dunno... I never really jived with this one.
"That has to be the most idiotic and contrived decision-making I've ever heard in my life" - Sheriff.

Rest in Peach Sid Haig!
Zack Gilligan made me wish this was a Victor Crowley vs. The Gremlins movie. That I'd fucking watch. I didn't care for this. It's shot more like an action film but without good directing chops for action films. This to me is the worst of the three in terms of performances and production yet it somehow bothered me the least while watching it. I don't get it either.
Danielle Harris’ characters try to go one day without suffering challenge: (IMPOSSIBLE!!!)
I liked this! Not as good as the original but a step up from the 2nd one! Parry Shen pulling a Devon Sawa from the Chucky show is actually so hilarious and entertaining. Also I completely lost it when Crowley said “Daddy” in that deep ass voice😭
-Y aquí me tienes haciendo no sé qué...
Not to sound like a raving madman who comes back from the swamp claiming a ghost orc killed Candyman (and that Lost World is better than the OG JP), but this is the best Hatchet by far, at least compared to II—I promise I'll get to the first eventually...
I don't know how to describe it, but this film has tExTuRe, if that makes sense? As opposed to II's sort of glossy look, adding to the grimy, gritty prison and swamp settings. It's dirty, like something Zombie'd shoot.
Harris is the best I've seen her, too, almost a progenitor of Halloween (2018)'s badass Laurie Strode, though both characters owe everything to Hamilton's God-tier turn as Sarah Connor. Speaking of, this…
I can listen to Caroline Williams talk all day long, Danielle Harris is a little more feisty in this one, and they shut the dude up before re-recounting the story of Victor Crowley, so I enjoy this movie. Lots of cameos, a third Perry Shen (Gary Shen is now his name), lots of blood, and I actually appreciated that things were taken a little more seriously this time around. Not to say they do away with the one liners or anything, just maybe a little less stuffed with them. Plus, Zach Galligan decides to fight something his own size (bad idea!! he had a hard enough time against the gremlins) and we finally get the battle of the Jasons that we've (or at least I have) always wanted.
