I don't like shitty horror movies.
I do like self-aware shitty horror movies.
This film is shitty, is fully aware of it, relishes in it and throws in some great gore.
I like this movie.
After going through some still lingering personal life tragedies surrounding 9/11 and the deaths of three grandparents in a three month span, I decided to cut back on my horror intake dramatically in the mid to late 2000’s. I still watched stuff, but not nearly as much, and mainly focusing on more mainstream genre offerings that I could catch at a multiplex or on cable.
I was very much out of the loop just trying to get back in a good headspace, and after another crisis hit I needed comfort, so I decided I should follow my heart and head back from my self imposed exile and see what the hell I missed. There was a slew of movies that…

SYNOPSIS: When a group of tourists in a New Orleans haunted swamp tour find themselves stranded in the wilderness, their evening of fun and spooks turns into a horrific nightmare.
The tag-line "Old School American Horror" is a little misleading. While it's true that "Hatchet" recalls the mad gore of the 1980s, the "horror" factor is actually absent, but, I don't have any problem with it. That being said, it's obvious that the people involved in the production have a…
Look. Okay. I watch a lot of horror movies. And I take a lot of notes. And I make a lot of plans.
See, I feel like my already documented regimen of never sleeping would be very helpful in surviving Freddy Krueger.
And with Jason, I think it's just a matter of perseverance. I mean, if little Tommy Jarvis could kill, I probably stand a fair chance.
And Michael Myers... Michael Myers couldn't even stand up to Busta Rhymes' weak ass kung fu. Michael Myers is not an issue.
But if I ever run across Victor Crowly? I am right fucked.
I decided to revisit this series since the latest installment is available on HBO and I’ve always had a good time with this one. Victor is one mean dude and the kills are pretty damn great. The comedy isn’t quite as sharp as I remember it being, but it still works well and you get a lot of laughs in between the buckets of gore.
The wife’s death is my favorite. Nothing can compare to the sick glee I got upon seeing that the first time I watched this.

Hatchet is labeled as 'old school American horror', which is the first sign that it's a gorehound flick for convention nerds. But there's a silliness here that's enjoyable if you're in the right mood for it. After a fun cold-open and a horrible credits song, it features a lengthy build-up of intolerable adult characters, and then it sends them into the Louisiana swamp. It's an evocative setting, and before long, Victor Crowley is slicing and dicing with a hatchet. It's always strange to see films that harken back to the golden age of slashers and get so much of it wrong, but this is fun enough on its own terms that it doesn't really matter.
Not me laughing my ass off the whole way lmao help this was too hilarious 💀
I bet the director is a huge Mortal Kombat fan -i
Probably, cuz every death is a fatality material umm

I thought I would like this more because I’d generally heard good things about this, particularly the gore. I hated practically every character in this though. Joel David Moore who is our de facto lead was pretty annoying and unlikeable. I’m not really sure why it works for Justin Long movies, but it does. It didn’t work here though. The opening is pretty slow too, though I liked the Tony Todd and Robert Englund cameos. But, man, the characters and the movie itself were peak annoying on the boat tour. Thankfully, when the killing starts the films at least lives up to it’s reputation there. Excellent kills. My favorite is when a womans’s jaw is pried open and the…
I remembered not liking Hatchet on my first watch, but I have really warmed up to it after today's viewing. The movie is really obnoxious in its mid-aughts-ness, but that kind of adds to the fun. Contains some pretty spectacular make-up effects (courtesy of John Carl Buechler 🙌🏻).
I had a blast watching this with first-timer Michelle.
So much fun seeing this with a crowd, always gets a great response.
I’m bias but it really holds up, from the gore to the tone.
