Handling the Undead has a neat take on the zombie concept at its core, more of a somber metaphor/meditation on making peace with loss and what we would do with the opportunity to see our loved ones again. Its visual language is gorgeous but it unfortunately moves about as slow as a zombie, the kind of punishing pacing that frustrates me because a film doesn’t need to carry itself in such a lethargic way to communicate something melancholic. Overall it is mostly a collection of moments, some haunting for sure, but ultimately expected and underwhelming. Renate Reinsve is innocent though. When I said we needed a new version of Pet Sematary this isn’t what I meant!

”I love you whether you like it or not.” “Ne me quitte pas.”“We’ve examined her, and I can’t explain it, but her heart has started beating again all by itself.” “She’s alive?” “Yes, but we’ve never seen this before.”
Handling the Undead is a very good horror film, and I loved watching it. But there is a good chance it won't appeal to a genre audience. It’s not fun, it’s not good spooky but rather morbidly depressed spooky, it’s not thrilling, it’s not gory, and the moments of violence, self-harm, and cruelty to animals all genuinely hurt. This film is not in the slightest…
This silence is deafening.
Anytime between the late 1990s and early 2000s, there was this horror show called Aahat. It was pretty popular at that time and was really good too. There was an episode I can’t fully recall but sort of remember in glimpses. In it, there’s a crystal ball that fulfills any of your wishes, but it also takes something back from you. So there is this guy who loses his father because of it. Later, he finds out that his father didn’t leave any property behind for him, so either he or his wife asks the crystal ball to resurrect his father. The way the father returns was so horrific, he was in the same state as…
“I love you whether you like it or not.”
I’ve sat aching for the chance to feel your embrace one more time, but now I can’t help but recoil. Icy touch sharp as a slap, waxen skin, the persistent sound of buzzing flies, the stench of earth and rot all like a flashing neon sign that screams, “I should be resting”. The scream I want to let out sits on my tongue like glue, sealing me shut. Wildest fantasies and most gut-wrenching nightmares brought to the world of the living.
Feels like an ingenious modern take on a common anxiety of the 19th century: premature burials. That first sound of pounding from below the surface plays like the starting cannon for a…
HANDLING THE UNDEAD left me disappointed. Despite an intriguing premise & a cast I was excited to see reunite, it squandered these elements with muted execution & tedious pacing. The atmosphere is chilling & there are some memorably grim images, but it failed to captivate me.
An excruciating experience. A great premise undone by glacial pacing, bizarre directorial/editing decisions, and protagonists that mostly don’t behave in recognizably human ways. What a tremendous cast to waste, too.
First movie I’ve seen at Sundance this year that I think is actively bad. Avoid.
Sundance 2024
This put the Zzzzz Zzzzzz Zzzzzzz in zombies. A painfully slow meditation on grief and loss. The somber score, dreary color palette and non-existent dialogue create an oppressively melancholy mood but this never feels like there’s a meaningful arc for any characters beyond, losing loved ones is sad. It’s hard to let go. You better let go though or they gonna f🤩king eat you. 😴🧟 pass.

Norwegian Pet Sematary.
“Handling the Undead” is a somber and occasionally frightening exploration of grief that is both well-made and well-acted even if it suffers from rigor mortis stiffness.
I may be a victim of my own expectations here. The prospect of reuniting Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie in a zombie drama fresh off “Worst Person” felt like must-see cinema. It’s not quite that, but it’s worth your time. Closer to “The Leftovers” than, say, “Night of the Living Dead.”
MVP of this is the score and sound design in enveloping you with a sense of dread. The film is very strong with engaging you through tone and atmosphere, but is thin in terms of story. Can’t help but feel there wasn’t quite enough up it’s sleeve
If Jeff Nichols made a slow burn Scandinavian horror film about how grief ultimately consumes, it would probably be “Handling the Undead.” I overall really dig it.
