In 1958 New York Diane Arbus is a housewife and mother who works as an assistant to her husband, a photographer employed by her wealthy parents. Respectable though her life is, she cannot help but feel uncomfortable in her privileged world. One night, a new neighbor catches Diane's eye, and the enigmatic man inspires her to set forth on the path to discovering her own artistry.

Basically, Nicole Kidman falls in love with Chewbacca! hahaha! All jokes aside, it's the story of Diane Arbus - a photographer who liked to take portraits of people who were considered bizarre, as opposed to her husband who was a fashion magazine photographer - who falls in love with a totally hairy guy (played by Robert Downey Jr.). There's no chemistry between the couple, the suspense of the character is dissipated from the start because there are boring scenes, and when they finally get together, it's a quick scene with several cuts, nothing organic. In short, it's a total disaster!

An underseen, under appreciated and misunderstood gem from Nicole Kidman’s filmography. I reckon this is her best performance after Birth, if not just as good as. She made so many movies after her Oscar win and some of them (this) got lost and never found a huge audience, or were just too strange for mainstream audiences.
An exercise in the bizarre, a film that sits peerless with nothing else to compare to. A beautiful romance and a unique biopic of a fascinating woman. Fantastic, it has been quite a while since I saw it but I am happy to see I enjoyed it just as much as I always did after many years.
Beautifully made too I must say, gorgeous music and visuals, production design is top notch. It has a fairytale type quality to it.

An unconventional romantic film.
I decided to focus my reviews on the task, as opposed to the film as a whole.
Downey and Kidman are just so strange. Their characters languish over almost everything. Their touch lingers whenever they pick up the simplest mundane object. It's very off-putting, but it does help to elevate them above the rest of the characters to the point where you can really see a connection forming between them.
Unfortunately, the romantic element kind of becomes derivative by the end of the film and reduced to more of a plot device than a true character development. In hindsight, I felt like I had to question Downey's character's motives…
Not at all what I was expecting given the movie poster...
It's kinda like a yuppie Mad Men meets Beauty & The Beast* polyamorous housewife edition, and their foray into a spirited and welcoming underworld. A solid combination of inspiration and tragedy, it's an imagined biopic of the influences and interactions that Diane Arbus may have had, and it's fun and free to be that way.
It's not for everyone since it lacks story and as fully disclosed, historical accuracy, but if you're open to it, it works well as both an eccentric slice of life film and a humanistic small set of character studies.
* With absolutely no disrespect to anyone with hypertrichosis, either in my review or the movie... The movie has in fact a lot of respect and sensitivity for all of its characters along with their conditions and circumstances.

Worth the 3.99 rental.

This is the weirdest fucking movie I've ever seen yet also the most touching and beautiful at the same time. It's really hard to put into words, because there's no way to describe it in a way that isn't immediately offputting-because it is. Just know that there is indeed a lot of fur.
The story behind Diane Arbus in this film is fictional, although the person is real. Hence why it baffled me that the creative direction they chose was to have her leave her family and basically cuckhold her husband... because I'm such a sensitive person now I'm forced to feel bad for them even though she's the protagonist. Minor detail in an otherwise absolutely beautiful and unique love story…
