Synopsis
Three different stories of youth set in different cities of China.
The rigorous city life of China, while bustling and unforgiving, contains the everlasting memories of days past. Three stories told in three different cities, follow the loss of youth and the daunting realization of adulthood. Though reality may seem ever changing, unchangeable are the short-lived moments of one's childhood days. A plentiful bowl of noodles, the beauty of family and the trials of first love endure the inevitable flow of time, as three different characters explore the strength of bonds and the warmth of cherished memories. Within the disorder of the present world, witness these quaint stories recognize the comfort of the past, and attempt to revive the neglected flavors of youth.

Added to: 2018 Ranked
As harmless as an anime can be. It's promoted as being made by the team behind Your Name. but take that as lightly as possible. While it features some of the awe-inspiring animation that Makoto Shinkai made so popular, it features very little of the emotional depth and complexity that could be found in his films. One major problem for this is that it’s three short films and not one continuing story. The first film, about a young boy remembering his youth through the experience of eating noodles, is cute enough to get a pass. It doesn’t throw any major revelations our way but it does manage to recreate the essence of a powerful memory from…

i could literally watch anime food being made for hours

I hate the way food is presented in animes because it looks so fuckin' tasty but then I realize the real-life dishes (at least some of them) are not as amazing as they build them up to be. 😢 And that just leaves me sad and hungry.
I didn't know what to expect from Flavors of Youth (2018), but when I saw the same people that brought us Your Name. (2016) were behind it, I knew I had to check it out.
The result is... kind of a mixed bag.
There are three animated shorts in here:
- The first one is good, but nothing special.
- The second is pretty boring, to be honest.
- The final one is amazing and kinda redeems the whole thing.
I'm glad I saw it, but damn, my expectations were high! lol
-
one star for the animation and another star for how good the food looked because that’s all i retained from this

Why does anime food always look so fucking delicious? 😭😭

This movie begins with a 30 minute narration on why a guy likes noodles. But someone is dying during his narration, so I guess we're suppose to feel melancholic about the noodles.

Aesthetically pleasing anime food animation🤤🥺❤️.
Reminiscing childhood, falling in love the old-fashioned way.
From the Studio that made Your Name an anthology of three short films emotional, pleasing and so so gorgeous ah.

In the ‘Rice Noodles’ story, Xiao Ming goes to a noodle shop yearning to get a dish comparable to the ones of his youth made out of passion and love. When his number is called, he sits at the table staring at the watery and flavorless dish before him.
This is the perfect metaphor to how I felt sitting through the entire 74 minute runtime.

The best looking rice noodles I've ever seen. I'm a sucker for the animation here - the short stories themselves are fine. The structure reminded me of 5 Centimeters Per Second (minus the uhh intense emotional agony). It never really strives to be anything more than a series of gorgeous images accompanied by soft, contemplative monologues.
I want rice noodles.
