another movie mistaking psychoanalysis with psychiatry. well, whatever I guess.
"love is only delusional projection" couldn't be a more appropriate sentence for this zero-chemistry bollocks between Richard "I look deep into your eyes with literally the one face move I've got in my repertoire" Gere and Kim "walking anxiety induced lability but apparently irresistible after one glance" Basinger. that whole thing is a huge 'pathological intoxication'.
nice to see young, therapist sexualizing Uma Thurman and Keith David as frustrated cop constantly chewing on a cigar though.
revision of my initial thoughts: I'm split if this is either a) written by a psychoanalyst as a satire b) by an absolute moron who thought he's edgy Joe Eszterhas or c) by someone hating psychoanalysis so much, trying to discredit it with this stupid premise of a story and the most ridiculous dialogues ever written on paper.

A yummy, sweet little treat with Hitchcock and De Palma sprinkles all over it, but unmistakably 90s with the all the dime-store psychology thrown in there. Director Phil Joanou does best the quality, well lit and cinematically shot, mid-budget studio picture.
*I clicked "I've watched this before" and while that is true, it's been since the 90s and it was basically seeing it for the first time.

I would seem to be in the minority here but I found this to be both intriguing and mesmerizing. So, in trying to figure out why, I sorted through the few Letterboxd reviews that exist and it would appear that people thought this movie was too talky and wasn't sexy. Final Analysis thought dump:
- The opening credits and Lalo Schifrin's score are to die for. Steven Soderbergh's (more successful) Side Effects feels like a spiritual remake of Final Analysis.
- Therapy sessions in movies from the 80s and 90s will always be a time-capsule lark that perhaps reinforced resistance to seeking help for everyday issues and anxieties. Everything is so heightened! So intense! And ultimately, a trap!
